air layering Japanese Maple

I have air layered many times. I was unable to airlayer a Japanese maple. The branch just died after about 6 weeks. Is there a special way to treat Japanese maples?

I haven't found that Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) require anything special. I simply remove a ring of bark and proceed as usual. Supposedly the laceleaf cultivars are harder to layer, but I've had reasonable success in my limited attempts with these as well.

Acer shirasawanum `aureum' is another story. I've found this one to be more tempermental but (knock on wood) after two failed attempts, I am currently getting roots on a couple of layers I took this year before budbreak.

Best regards,
Carl

Bob, I've been very successful airlayering J maples and tridents using the usual techniques - remove bark and cambium, paint with rooting hormone, pack with spaghum moss, wrap in plastic, wait...Here in California I can usually separate the layers in 8 to 10 weeks.

I'm about 90% successful. When I've lost them it was either due to letting them dry out, or getting impatient and separating too early.

Perhaps it was just bad luck the first time out with the maple?

Yeah I agree with the expert advice above. I lose about 1 in 12. You must have started with that 1, eh? Keep at it.

cambium

I performed the air layer by cutting through a half inch of the layer of bark that comes off very ealily and packed it with an absorbant material to hold water and wrapped it in plastic. Brian spoke ofl removing the cambium. Howe does one recognize the cambium? What if it is not removed?
