Re: Air Layering Instructions (1/3)

The main thing is that you use a threaded sphagnum of the type used to line hanging baskets, as opposed to fine ground, partially decomposed sphagnum used as a soil amendment.

You will usually find it in garden centers sold to line hanging baskets for fuchias and the like.

Be careful not to inhale the fine dust from sphagnum. It can cause respiratory infections or skin rash, but I believe that's more a problem with the powdered sphagnum, and it may be particular to certain moss sources. I've never handled moss with anything but my bare hands, but this has to stop and make you think:

scary, huh!

see the bit on Sporotrichosis at the bottom:

Layering sure sounds like a good way to get quality stock. You get a good eval of your material...clones. Also just a great replenishable (sp?) source, I'm all for that.

Q: I assume this can be done on most species...how about my SoCal Coastal Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia)? Are they a candidate for [air] layering? I know they are slower growers, any time frame estimates? Other specific tips?
thanx again.

hack to his neighbor: Can I borrow a limb of your tree for a year or 2?
neighbor: "Huh?"

Re: Air Layering Instructions (1/3)

John Thompson is an avid oak enthusiast here in San Jose. *He and another collector tried ground-layering oak as a means of collecting, but found that the trees' bark was growing across the layering girdle, essentially healing over.

Later, they began adding a few wraps of wire under the upper wound, which is supposed to help with this. *You will probably need some type of physical barrier to make this successful, and I would expect it would take closer to 18 months.

Regards,

Matt
