Re: air layering
Air layering is a modified form of ground layering, which is a propagation method for plants which involves interrupting the flow of sap to the roots, which sends a strong signal to the tree or plant to issue roots at the wound point or die.
Because water and minerals are translocated in the interior of the tree in the xylem, the sap layer on the exterior (phloem) can be interrupted by ring girdling the tree or by applying some type of physical constraint - like a wire tourniquet, and the leaves will continue to be hydrated by the roots, but the sap can't get back to the roots, so the upper part of the wound will hopefully callus over and under proper conditions (dark, warmth, moist environment) issue roots before the layered portion dies. You can find more on this in the ***FAQ*** or in the bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques->Propagation->Layering Regards, Matt
