I Did Something Wrong

Well folks I would like to share with you my attempt at airlayering that I did this summer.First off I got this tree from wal mart for 3.00 they was getting rid of their stock so I figured what the heck might as well give it a try.I cut about a 1" strip off the branch and coated it with pleanty of rooting hormone wrapped it in moss and covered it with plastic. This is the finnished layer.

I waited for 4 months until couriosity got the best of me and I looked inside the plastic .To my surprise the cut had healed over with a thick callous like growth. The branch was still healthy and growing so I said what the heck I cleaned up the cut and rewrapped it and decided to wait 1 month .After 3 weeks the branch started to turn brown and die ( its completely dead now).I'm not sure where I went wrong but I think when I made my initial cut that I didnt go deep enough ( I just went through the bark).Any help with this will be greatly appreciated so I wont make the same mistakes next year.As you can see in the pic below they isnt any life left in the branch.

Thanks for posting this attempt. I'm sure you'll be more successful next time.

You need to cut more deeply, down to the wood and remove a section that is as wide as the trunk is thick. For more information, see the ***FAQ*** on propagation->Layering

Regards,

Matt
