1st Try At Air Layering
Here are a couple of pics of a Juniper that I Am trying to air layer. Yes, I know that it's the end of Augest, but I just want to see if I can get away with it at this time of year in Ohio. After I chop the air layer off, I will attempt to do some kind of jin with the left over trunk. Any suggestions with the rest of the tree, or even a virtual?

On the base, put a strong piece of wire on it and twist it 180 degrees between the two branches to move one to the opposite side of the trunk.
On the layer - I understand it's an experiment, but usually you layer at a point where there is some interest (movement or taper) in the trunk. The wire that is on it looks incorrectly applied. Apparently it isn't anchored in the soil and the wiring gets very odd, it doesn't reach the end of the apex and it gets really weird after the first branch. Regards, Matt

Ok Matt, I took your advice from our chat, and this is the result. I feel like I did something wrong. What do you think?

Well you didn't wire it out all the way as we discussed, so you could twist the trunk around 180. It would be very hard to do since it is only half wired. It also looks like you may have the wire on too tightly, particularly around the base of the first branch.
The idea is to twist the trunk between the first and second branches to distribute the branches on both sides, but since you stopped the wiring at the second branch, there is nothing for it to hold onto. Better rewire it all the way to the end of the branch you are trying to twist around. Then you can twist and bend the trunk so you have branches on both sides, and change the trunk angle to make it appear that it throws off branches at the outsides of the curves. Wire can only exert forces when it is anchored and you have no anchor here it just stops right at the branch Regards matt \_ branches at the outside of the curve Sorry I can show / only one side. \_ /

here's a quick virtual of how the tree might look in a year or two. The branches are too straight, but that is easy to change with wire. It's actually harder to do in the virtual!
Regards, Matt

Doody,
[please excuse crude virtual] I think this is what Matt means. You can see the branches look like branches now, and come off the trunk at the outside of the curves. You should be able to see now where to apply wire... also i've not altered the trunk alignment on the virtual, just shown where to place branches... Remember I am a learner too so don't take what I say as gospel. Hope this helps. Regards,

Should I wait to rewire, or should I go ahead and try it now. It is an experimental tree, but If I can get away with not killing it, that would be better.
