Today's tree is a Needle Juniper Grove. You can use the pencil tool beneath the attachment to make notes.

Quick Notes - first thing.

I need to be quick today - just so busy at work

First thoughts:

Nice central tree.
Appears to be only 6 trees, not 7.
Little taper on any of the smaller trunks, only the main one has good taper.
Far too much foliage, particularly on the left.
Pot is about right for the planting.
Soil Covering needs attention.
Canopy line about right when all thinned out.

In all, it has the makings of a nice planting, but needs some serious time spending on it.

I'll leave it to John to do a nice virtual.

Cheers,
Ian.

Jarry,

Nice virtual, love the overall shape.

Can see you added the extra tree. I think the seventh one could well be lurking behind the main central trunk in reality, but of course should be more visible from the front as we view.

This looks a very nice composition now - just a shame about the lack of taper !

Ian

Just a couple of thoughts to spur discussion.

1. This is a VERY formal group. Think about what that might suggest concerning container options.

2. The composition is also very symmetrical. What could be done, particularly with the placement of the trees to energize the design and relieve some of the monotony?

Regards,

Matt

Okay, this forest was obviously motivated from Goshin's legacy.

First of all, I love it!!! I'm not sure about the number, but one tree looks to be a twin-trunk rather than two trees (in my book a twin-trunk is one), but I could be mistaken. It does raise the issue of how important odd numbers are in forests. I feel that if you start counting trunks to "make sure" the number is odd, the actual number is a non-issue. The forest has exceeded the need for odd numbers to support asymetry. I believe that after about 7 trees, ANY number is okay. Having said that I added two trees which I feel should be added (in the back) to give more depth. I really like the secondary tree on the right/middle that has that extreme deviation in trunk near the apex. I think that should be a major feature in the display. It immediately reminded me of the swamps of coastal NC/SC where, due to storm damage, bald cypress (especially) get the apex broken off and a top branch changes direction to form a new apex. Very powerful stuff.

I have shown where I believe the foliage should be trimmed/pinched back to. This is a very noteworthy bonsai, in my opinion. I like the container and display, as is. Some tidying up of the moss/surface soil would be an improvement, but no real changes.

I am very impressed with this forest. The artist is to be commended.

John

EDIT: I mistakenly sent the first virtual with foliage that can't possibly grow (dead apex). The second virtual is the "correct" one. Sorry.

Arrgh

I just spent 25 minutes working on a virt in bonsaipaint, and then clicked a link in an email to get some work done. Ooops, erased all my work!

Dang, 25 minutes of my employer's time wasted!

pootsie

p.s. Matt, there's still an issue with the "Angry" treesmiley. Angry smiley ... kinda odd phrase ...

pootsie,

I would make a smart-alic remark about lawyers, but I've done the same thing myself (more than once). Cyber-space claims another masterpiece.

Angry-smiley sounds like an oxymoron. Of course, it's very descriptive and an accurate portrayal of someone about to go "postal". The calm before the storm, if you will.

John

Hi quys,

Jarry: I really think this is a very good improvement for the group, I don´t think that the extra tree is that important. imho the group looks good, even with 6 trees. Most important is the triangle shape you created in the virt.

Ian: like you I believe that the 7th tree stands behind the big tree in the middle.

Overall it can be a very nice group, maybe a repot is to be done here, for re-aranging the group and to show the 7th tree if its there. About the pot choice, thats alway a difficult issue, its very much taste dependent.

Okay I think I fixed it.

You should be able to be angry now (or mad rather)

This won't fix the old angrysmiles, but from here on out it's a mad, mad, mad world.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. you can bill that 25 minutes as a full hour
