Vance,

There's an enormous difference between critique in the sense of careful and intellegent commentary, and critique in the sense of aesthetic butchery misrepresented as decisive improvement.

Fortunately, you are firmly in the former camp in your remarks above. I think almost anyone can appreciate that sort of critique of even the most masterfully designed trees.

Best regards,
Carl

Walter,

Fantastic virtual. I had to combine the original with yours just to see how fantastic a transformation you had made !! I couldn't see how to improve this tree much more, then you show us this variation. You are truely a "visionary" and I take great inspiration from your work. We will ALL learn to improve our own trees with such input on this thread. Please make this a regular visit on your "rounds".

Thanks and best wishes,
Ian.

Now the tree has direction and comitment. The trunk is now brought into harmony with the top, it is no longer two disparet expressions of art seperate from each other. Good Job Walter.

It's very inspiring following experienced bonsai artists thought process and explanations into their designs. Walter and Vance I highly appreciate your input here.

Thank you David, for complimenting me in the same breath with Walter.

My opinion for what it's worth; Kimura is probably the most visonary artist in Asia and perhaps the world, but Walter Pall is the most visonary artist in Western Culture. He calls what he does a European point of view. I don't really care how he defines the roots of his style, his work is a prime example of what I have been trying to say around here; rules are important as a starting point, beauty makes rules of its own that don't afford scrutiny by the book because their existance is adding another chapter to the book. Where do you think the original rules came from? Both Kimura and Walter are rewriting the book.

Walter's trees speak to our hearts. They are the essence of the tree. Always in balance, always harmonious.

He has an eye like no one else.

Pootsie's 2 cents:

I love this tree. It has strength in everything, IMHO, so I won't even list that.

My only change would be the pot (and just the slightest trim of the profile of the canopy in the top left). I would go with something more masculine to compliment the power of this tree, but not a complete square.

Here's my virtual idea. Be nice, I worked on this longer than I should have

All,

Just found this one in the Gallery (from Charles' tour of Japan).

This is very similar to how Walter sees this tree going and is another guide for us.

Ian.
