You can make notes on the tree using the pencil tool just below the attachment.

I tried doing a virtual, but nothing was an improvement. I like this bonsai, as is, save I would thin the foliage out considerably. Since literati should have a "less is more" philosophy, I feel it is presently too top heavy in regards to foliage. Once it is thinned, I would think it would balance out better.
That's my only suggestion. Nice. I went ahead and added a virtual that explains what I would want. Red arrows indicate where branches are moved into position. The black arrow shows where I think there is reverse taper (maybe just the photo). The foliage is about how I would reduce it this summer. John

Nice Tree and Pot combination.
I am with John on his virtual thinning out the foliage. When the pads have filled out a little more from this stage it will be a fine looking tree. I would gladly have it in my collection. Looks like a bit of reverse taper to me tho. Ian. |

This is a tree that I would like to see multiple views on.
Strength: The trunk has nice soft movement Weakness: Couple Nebari work: there is little to note, it is akward and unbalanced. Roots can be a real strength with pines The Front: the chosen front of this tree creates an odd appearence. I am not sure if the reverse taper is real or a result of a poor angle and placement of the tree. The tree actually has two points of reverse taper. It would seem the owner was trying to show the strength of the first branch but it creates a look of one tree placed on top of the other. The top: The top of the bothers me and needs to be moved in some way. Suggestion for improvement: I can't tell if that first branch is moving towards or away from the camera. This is where multiple angles would help. I think that perhaps planting the tree at a new angle may open new possibilities Last edited by bonsaimaniac : 16-Mar-2005 at 11:14 AM. |

chop chop. . .hehehe
here is my 2 cents.
i agree that the reverse taper could be from the angle that the pic was taken from, but i am going to take it for what it is. i think that this tree would look better with a major chop! this would get rid of any reverse taper regaurdless if they are really there or not.

I'm Probably Way Off
Ok. Here's my first attempt. Basically, I like the tree but I think it could use some shaping.
The apex as it is looks awkward to me. I'd be tempted to remove it or bend it down (or over to the right a bit) to be more in partnership with the branch just below it. Right now, it has a har-branch thing happening with the lower branch immediately opposite of it. The bottom, or first branch could have one of the secondary branches wired more toward the trunk to spread out the canopy a bit, like a thin cloud. This could be repeated in the second branch. Also on the second branch, I'd see about lowering it just a bit to open it up. I suppose then it wouldn't be a strict literati, but I think that's what I would try. Of course, if it didn't work, most of the changes I'd consider wouldn't be permanent... |

Less is more
this tree seems a little too top heavy for a bunjin. So I would start by removing everything but this branch. Then I would wire it a bit more downward.

2. What are its weaknesses? Top heavy, looks like it will tumble over. 3. How could the tree be improved? I like cbongo's virtual, it creates a lot of visual interest. 4. Does the tree have a message you could define in words? Not currently, it looks like a design waiting to happen. 5. How would you arrange the tree with other elements to create an interesting two or three-point display? With Cbobgo's virtual in mind, add a mountain suiseki in the foreground. A scroll with a morning sun rise in the background (symbolizing the tree's will to keep on living).
