this looks totally contrived by man -- nothing natural nor artistic. The curves seem to be there to be curves and the straight portion of the thick trunk is very discordant with the curvy swurvy stuff. JMHO

Uummmmm, sorry to be the butcher this time but I would pull this apart and create individual trees. I would probably discard the middle tree and keep the end two.

Just don't like the composition especially with the trunk movement being opposing.

I was just trying to do some more virtual work on this TOD when my wife walked by, took a look and said,"thats really ugly!" Not being able to disagree with her assessment, I decided to give it up.

I agree with David Yedwab's assessment. I wondered if it would benefit from some more ground cover, covering over the ungainly looped trunk in the middle.

Regards,

Chris.

I agree with DavidN, it actually looks appealing when split into two seperate trees.

The problem with this composition - apart from the age of the material used being in direct conflict to the message that it is attempting to portray, are the mirror-image trunks of the main and secondary trunks. Personally, I like to see some conflict in a bonsai, but this is taking things too far.

Regards,

Fish.

Fish,

I agree with your comments about the material appearing so young. Of course, a bold design created early in the life of a bonsai can become something great in time. I think that is where this bonsai is headed. Granted, the trunks aren't truly in a congruent shape, but with some filling in of foliage and appropriate tweaking, this should be less of a sticking point.

David's suggestion of two individual trees is a very straightforward and sensible approach. I still think in the spirit of the thread, the initial idea can be kept and greatly improved. Another great problem to have.

Take care,

John

This tree should definitely be a raft. Of course you can't do anything yet with the center tree, the trunk needs to be buried first. I like this tree, though, with that caveat.

I think without a doubt that the base section should be buried to hide the awkward bend , but I also think that the second tree shoul grow a bit more to show more size difference from the third tree . also to lend fill to the negative space at the top middle of design . I think with time and fixing of those flaws , and a few branch placement issues , this could be a much nicer raft
