Tree of the Day - Tuesday May 17, 2005
NOTE: After today's tree we're out of TODs for the time being, so if you have a tree to contribute, you can start a new thread in this forum - it will appear hidden
This forum is an experiment that has evolved out of some of the activities on the bonsaischool program. I'm going to select a bonsai each day to spark group discussion.
ABOUT TODAY'S TREE: Today's tree is a Mugo Pine. You can make notes with the pencil tool underneath the attachment.

Umm,
No takers - i'll be brave Not too sure on this one at all. Is it some sort of raft, twin trees or even three The larger left one has some promise, but the branch union just above soil level just be "hacked off" ? (needs some attention) The "middle tree" looks like a back branch that has been brought forward and has a curve that is in total conflict to the main trunk line. However, the smallest looks like a remote tree to the main one and has some nice shape. The overall canopy line is generally pleasing across the composition, but I think I would be tempted to look at the possibility of working on the main tree and the smallest - as "single" specimens in future. Remove that branch coming round from the back !! Any other thoughts ?? Ian. |

This appears to be fairly young material. It is a very bold style which I happen to like. The main trunk bends totally different from the secondary trunk to the right. Normally, I see that as a bad flaw, but the styling (especially with the third trunk bending WITH the second) makes this composition work. Some filling in of foliage will greatly improve the silhouette.
The pot does not appeal to me. I would much rather see this on a slab. That, and some time, would make this a wonderful bonsai. John

The way the branch come off the trunk to the left to form the second trunk brings my eye right to where it sticks out from the trunk and scithers across the ground. I think I would bury it.

Strange how this coincides with the picture of a live oak I posted today. This bonsai reminds me of how the live oak has limbs that will droop down to the ground. The mugo bonsai has the two smaller trunks that have a similar character.
John P.S. Will, you are correct, it is the 17th. No nut-farm for you yet, pal.

I found it to be a confusing and incoherent composition, and thought it may be necessary to start over.

Mike,
Sorry, I'm not keen on that version. Looks like three dancing snakes to me ! But then, I doubt if it would be a favourite of mine in the original form. Best Regards, Ian. |
