Be careful - it is one of a variety of techniques that attempts to build callus tissue by wounding the bark. Other, potentially less destructive, methods include poking holes with a nail or making slits with a knife. I have tried both of the latter, but not in any controlled experiments.
The particular tree in this thread is only a couple inches tall, so hitting it with a hammer might not be the best approach. Regards, Matt
