Tree of the Day - Tuesday, April 19, 2005

This forum is an experiment that has evolved out of some of the activities on the bonsaischool program.

I'm going to select a bonsai each day to spark group discussion.
  • Trees of the day don't belong to anyone you're likely to know, so there is very little chance that you're going to hurt anyone's feelings with your honest opinions, critique and suggestions. This is key.
  • However, if you recognize the tree, please keep it to yourself until at least the next day.
  • If you have a tree-of-the-day you'd like to submit, you can start a new thread (not a new post) in this forum. It won't appear immediately.
Some questions to ask about the tree of the day
  1. What are the tree's strengths?
  2. What are its weaknesses?
  3. How could the tree be improved?
  4. Does the tree have a message you could define in words?
  5. How would you arrange the tree with other elements to create an interesting two or three-point display?
You can respond right here.

ABOUT TODAY'S TREE: Today's tree is a Common Pear (Pyrus communis). You can make notes with the pencil tool underneath the attachment.

This is a magnificent tree but terrible pot for the tree. Only change would be the pot. Maybe something like this.

Sorry was in a rush.

What a beauty. Change the pot....maybe shift the apex slightly right and adjust shape slightly. I'd also want to keep that superb trunk clean and open.

Oh! Deary me the pot is of course way too small. If it were my tree i would layer just under branch no.1. Once the roots kick in remove branches 1 and 2. Perhaps then elevate (wire) branch no.3 to create the new apex. Eliminate the growth above to create a better taper as the tree is out sync in that department. This may be radical but i would be prepared to face the time factor. I am still the new kid on the block.

Such a nice tree. I love the bark on it. I also agree with a new pot; i think Arnie's choice for the pot is a great match. I wouldn't do much of anything with this tree except work on ramification of the branches, its all I could think of.

Indeed a very nice tree, with a wrong pot.

What immediately catched my eye was the second branch on the right. It begins with a strange bend and then it covers somewhat the branch underneed it. I don't inderstand why this branch is kept/wired in this position by the owner/developer of the tree.
Therefore I removed it in a virtual. Initially the first branch on the right stayed. That didn't work at all. Therefore I "cut" away both branches in a new virt as suggested by Ashbarns9999. I woudn't airlayer it though.

In the second virt I pulled the first right branch down to fill the open space on the right more.

Offcourse I know that it would leave a giant scar on the right side, but this is what I would have done.

Congratulations, you've utterly castrated a world-class tree.

I don't understand how you can look at your own virtual side-by-side with the original and not see your mistake.

I know I'm being awfully direct in the above remarks, but this is one of my favorite trees in the US - and the thought of some ignorant doing the sort of damage that you've depicted above is horrifying.

That it is your favorite tree in the US is possible, but different people, different taste.

This is what I saw in the tree, without ever seeing it for real. Probably I would look at it in a different way. But even when I´m wrong, I still have trouble with the second right branch or is this the back branch?

Beautiful tree, and I agree that the pot is too small and otherwise inappropriate. The virtual is one of my favorite pots. It is rectangular, but I feel that the beveled corners are a compromise between straight rectangular and oval.
