Today's Tree of the Day is a Juniper Cascade. You can use the pencil tool under the attachment to make notes.

I don't feel the cascading branch is doing much for this tree. It has a rather un-styled look and doesn't look maintained anywhere near as well as the top of the tree.
With a different pot, I think this would be my decision.

Please don't mind the crude virtual.

I'm with Adam on this. His virtual is exactly the way I would go as well. Good job Adam.

The bonsai has good taper, base, ramification, and foliage pads....all in the upper part. While the cascade branch is healthy looking, it doesn't add to the attributes of the top, rather it distracts from them. For that reason I feel it should be removed.

Obviously, a different pot is called for in that case. Unglazed, oval, or soft-cornered rectangle. The tree off-set to the left (significantly).

Thanks Matt.

I hope everyone enjoys a nice Easter weekend.

John

Hi All Treedayers !

Yes I agree too !

There is just NO taper at all in the cascade part and very little styling.

The cut-off version in the above virtuals is how I would alter this tree.

Ian.

Is it me, or does that cascade branch look like it was cut and pasted into this picture?

I mostly agree. But I think before I completely remove the cascading branch, I'd at least try to do a jin on it and see if it worked. I think it might add drama if there was a jin element. Not real sure, though, because the rest of the tree might be too lush and full to be in harmony with a jin. But I would try it.

And I definitely like the shallow pot.

Ralph,

It's not just you. I thought that myself.

All right, don't laugh at my virtual pot. It was the best I could do with the "pencil" program.
