This is a cool idea.

weak points, the very visible branch on the right side, above the first mass of foliage on the right side, clashes lines with the branch opposite it on the left. the branch on the right comes off almost horizontal, on the left however is a much sharper angle. i would bring that down to match the right side more.

the apex, or canopy is kinda pinwheelish and the trunk just seems to stop, instead of somehow flowing, or blending into twigs with foliage.

very strong nebari, and i like the moss, it goes well with the bark texture and matches with the foliage color in that it add a different flavor of green to the mix, which also works well with the bark color.

I like this tree. If it stayed "as is", I would still like it.

If it were mine, I would want the trunk, moved in the pot, more to the left. My virtual is basically just rearranging a few branches and eliminating two. I think the foliage (low) crossing the trunk should be removed, it's too nice a trunk to cover up that low. My virt sort of gives it a "pine tree" style, but I would opt to round out the apex as it progresses. The second and third virtuals are more "finished" renditions.

Still a wonderful tree. The owner should be proud of it.

John

I'd give it a prominent place and try to grow with it every year (i.e., I'm not good enough to critique this tree). For me it simply flows. Wonderful.

I agree with John - this is the best tree posted so far on this section and he has done a great job again with his virtual of the possible future look.

Here is my opinion. (I have 20+ years experience but would class myself as an enthusiast and NOT as an expert - so newbies please do not take this as expert instruction).

It is a very masculine tree and deserves a fairly "heavy" pot to blend in with the trunk size an image. I have selected one to blend with the bark colour and texture, which has the added advantage of being suitable for the tree in ALL seasons - even if it is displayed without foilage. The present pot is far too small and the tree is planted too high. Here I have moved the trunk off centre as John noted earlier - more to the left and also lowered it down into the deeper pot. There was too much moss before, which has now been removed.

A very nice tree and one I would love to have in my collection.

Ian.

missed out on Thursday's tree...

[I missed out on taking part in Thursday's tree of the day. I did have a critique written but couldn't post it in time. Here it is. Maybe this post can be appended to the correct thread ??]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a GREAT idea Matt!

I have been having isp problems so I was not able to critique the first two.

as for this trident: (I'm doing this before I read the other posts)

Strengths:
  • Powerful masculine trunk
  • rugged masculine bark
  • Strong nebari
  • Moss
  • good trunk movement
  • good branch placement (apart from see below)
  • good balancing of the rightward trunk movement with a low left foliage pad

Weaknesses:
  • feminine pot conflicts with other masculine elements
  • Raised feet on pot giving impression of instability
  • Skinny soup-spoon shaped branch on upper right
  • Canopy branches have slight spoked look
  • Bad placement in pot

This tree exudes power. I would call the trunk a "muscle trunk". The tree itself is dynamic and quite well balanced. Three things would help the balance: extending the foliage outwards at top right in a uneven dome profile; selection of a new pot; better placement in the new pot.

There is a lot of detail in the foliage, which is complemented by the texture of the bark. These two features along with the nebari and moss help to convey the impression of a very large and old tree. On the other hand, the smoothness and large curves of the pot detract from this.

I would select a rounded rectangular pot about 1/4 of the the current width wider, and a little deeper. Planting the tree so that the extra width is all on the right will help the balance. The colour of the pot should be mottled light brown or grey, textured to match the trunk.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

All great points - funny that you did say all this BEFORE seeing the other posts. How that pot of mine fits your recommendations

It was deeper in my design package - but got shrunk down a bit on the conversion to "j.peg".

Still, this will be fun, be my guest at being first on the next one.

All the best,
Ian.
