Tree of the Day - Thursday, April 14, 2005
This forum is an experiment that has evolved out of some of the activities on the bonsaischool program.
I'm going to select a bonsai each day to spark group discussion.
ABOUT TODAY'S TREE: Today's tree is a Plum. You can make notes with the pencil tool underneath the attachment.

I really like Arnie's virtual for this tree and the statement of intent. I would adjust only one thing further to complete the image: removing the branch which crossed in front of the trunk catching my eye every time I looked at it (and thus needing to fill out the resultant gap from other branches). cheers, Shane

To me the child is competing with the shari and jin. Bye child. The crossover branch would go. First branch lowered. The two 'jins' beneath would go as they detract from the flow of the trunk line. I would like to work on this tree.

To me, the initial mother/daughter style is appropriate and the two compliment each other in this design. I find the shari a little overpowering. For such a delicate graceful trunk, the shari seems heavy. I would suggest removing about 1/3 of it.
I removed a crossing branch and the jinned ones. I feel they did not add to the silhouette. I would like to see fuller foliage, and on a "delicate" trunk like this, not so much visible branching. Care should be taken to make the foliage "full" but not heavy. I love the pot. In my initial viewing of a tree, I always pay attention to how long it takes me to "see" the pot. If I can critique the styling of the tree BEFORE I notice the pot, more often that not, the pot is complimentary to the design, or at least neutral. I was finished with my virtual before I really "saw" it. Good color contrast, and shape. Correct placement too. John Edit: I noticed after I posted, that I had did my virtual based on Arnie's virtual and not the original photo. My apologies Arnie. Of course, it means I like your pot selection much more than the rectangular one. Thanks for accommodating my error.

Although a little unusual on a deciduous tree I like the strong shari.
I like the image it creates of a tree that has had to struggle a bit to exist and protect the child. Agree with the crossing branch.....missed that one ![]() |

What a pretty tree.
I did a virtual before I read what others had posted, or looked at their virts. I don't think mine added anything in comparison. You guys are good. I'd keep the deadwood as well. It's a nice contrast between the hardship and gracefulness of the tree. It illustrates that you can be strong and graceful at the same time... |
