My attempt at #1

Needs the foliage reducing as it seems a bit heavy, but the balane is certainly right.

NOOOOOOO!

Why is everyone trying to turn this into a cookie cutter??
Walter, where are you?!?

IMHO, just a trim up top (and do something about the lip later)

Strengths:
  • Nice pot
  • good moss
  • good rugged bark
  • good movement in trunk
  • good distribution of foliage
  • good ramification

Weaknesses:
  • diddy jin on lower trunk
  • lacks cohesion in alignment of foliage
  • uneven taper

The first thing that struck me when I saw this tree is the uneven taper, where the lower trunk suddenly reduces in caliper half way up and then continues to the top with a slight taper. This is a bit of a bugbear of mine. The next problem I see is the alignment of the needles and branch ends. The lowest branches on the left and right appear to have an upward aspect to the foliage, the rest of the tree appears to have been trained downwards.

Other than that, I see a confident tree. The bark is a very obvious masculine element, but the curved trunk and pot appear feminine. I see this conflict in so many bonsai that I begin to wonder if gender is actually relevant...

The soil, sloping from right down to left gives support to the left leaning trunk, with just a hint of roots being gently pulled from the ground on the right.

Even though I dislike the abrupt change in trunk caliper, I would be very happy to own this tree.

(Again, all written before reading other posts. I use these as practice, and not to offer serious advice.)

Regards,

Chris.

I am glad to see some controversy and discussion on this one!

Tb: What's a diddy jin?

Here is my attempt to tame the beast. I think the chief problem is that the by the time the first bend occurs, the tree is almost out of the frame of the pot.

I just selected the left side & squashed it. I think it is an improvement but I am still not quite happy with it.

Regards,

Matt

Matt, diddy is tiny, small, insignificant

Now I've read all the other opinions, I can't believe I missed the balance problem.

Regards,

Chris.
