OK, this post I'm not being facetious.
Why not, in effect, ground layer it by planting it in a deep pot after removing the lower branch. Once it grows roots higher up, remove the lower roots and put it back in a bonsai pot. Now you have a short, powerful tree with good taper.

Very interesting idea Mike. I would still like to see that lower branch saved though. It has character that would benefit the bonsai, still the air-layering idea has promise.

I like this tree. It reminds me of the short powerful oaks I see out and about locally.

I could be argued that the odd looking reverse taper gives character, but in all honesty I think it needs to be fixed. I have a sneaky feeling though that it might be easier said than done.

The first branch on the right needs lowering a few degrees, to either horizontal or just below. The foliage needs to fill in on the upper left of the canopy. The canopy in general needs to become more rounded. The first branch on the left looks like it terminates with an uwkward upward kink, maybe a bud could be grown out horizontally for a few months to allow the kinked section to be fixed.

Lots of the oaks I see locally have hollow trunks. I wonder what this tree would look like with a hollow. The light coloured section of trunk that goes from the front root upwards looks like a good location for a hollow.

The pot does not work. As has been mentioned it is too light and draws the eye first. A darker rectangle would be more appropriate.

Regards,

Chris.
