Here is today's tree - a green Atlas Cedar. You can use the pencil button below the attachment to make notes.
P.S. We will have new Tree-of-the-Days only on weekdays, Mon-Fri. We need those weekends for working on bonsai - repotting, shows and getting those contest entries together! But we'll leave the Friday Tree open throughout the weekend.

1. Strength: The bark is great. Nice movement and looks healthy.
2. Don't like the nebari or the pocket branches. Main branches up top are too heavy/thick. 3. See photo for suggestions. 4. Nebari and first part of trunk look phalic. Maybe needs to be planted on the side of a verticle rock leaning to the left, top cut off... Oh wait this is a family forum, no vertuals with this idea Sorry couldn't help myself. 5. Let others takle this one. Newt

Okay, here's my virtual. I'll leave the pot to Ian who is much more adept at containers than I. This is what I see in the tree though. The nebari will be tough to change, but it needs some work. The "Caption" box is where i see the planting position in a shallower/wider pot.
This tree has some promise with a little work. John

Here are my thoughts, again posted before reading the other posts.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
This tree has great potential, but some conflicting elements need resolving before it can realise that potential. The moss, nebari and bark all imply age, but the tufted and unevenly spread foliage and the jaunty pot imply youth. I think the foliage needs tightening into better defined pads within the already well defined outline. Some of the thin branches near the middle of the trunk need removing. The right hand foliage profile needs breaking up. Sounds like a lot of work but three or four hours of wiring and pruning would work wonders. A shallow-ish bowl or saucer pot with outward curving sides would suit I think, this would enhance the femininity that the graceful trunk line has. Regards, Chris.

Don't have the time left this afternoon, but after playing with it a little, I think there is potential there once you reduce the foliage and wire some branches out. Lose the bar branch (third one up on the right)
Straighten out the one above it and maybe the other one above that, trying not to leave any huge gaps. What a great idea, though! I guess I missed this Thursday. |

Here are a couple of pot options using Johns virtual.
The first is a little unusual, but having a sweeping curved side rectangle in a un glazed finish, gives a very complimentary feel to the feminine lines of the tree. The second, is an outer rimmed oval and is perhaps a little more traditional. Ian |

I missed Thursday's tree because I took too long to post. Here's my assessment of Friday's tree. I wait to look at the other member's opinions until I've added mine so I can use this as a learning tool. This pine is an informal upright. The trunk taper is nice and the bark is rugged and textured. The trunk is vertical and slanted. The branches are static and the middle branches are too thick I would remove the thickest. I would wire some branches down to suggest age. There is a negative space on the left that makes the foliage/canopy shape irregular. It can be assumed that it is triangular but the branches need work to achieve this. Shorten the length of upper branches (step downward) if they are removed d/t thichness this might also accomplish the shaping change. The pot color is good for this masculine tree but even though it has the angularity for a masculine tree, the hexagon pot is too small and I feel that a rectangular pot with the tree offset to the right would be a better choice. This pine has great potential!
