Tree of the Day - Friday April 8, 2005

This forum is an experiment that has evolved out of some of the activities on the bonsaischool program.

I'm going to select a bonsai each day to spark group discussion.

  • Trees of the day don't belong to anyone you're likely to know, so there is very little chance that you're going to hurt anyone's feelings with your honest opinions, critique and suggestions. This is key.
  • However, if you recognize the tree, please keep it to yourself until at least the next day.
  • If you have a tree-of-the-day you'd like to submit, you can start a new thread (not a new post) in this forum. It won't appear immediately.
Some questions to ask about the tree of the day

  1. What are the tree's strengths?
  2. What are its weaknesses?
  3. How could the tree be improved?
  4. Does the tree have a message you could define in words?
  5. How would you arrange the tree with other elements to create an interesting two or three-point display?
You can respond right here.

THIS SPACE FOR RENT - This area used to contain a request for TOD material. However, after month of TODs, we never received a tree for review by this cadre of reviewers!

ABOUT TODAY'S TREE: Today's tree is a Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis). You can make notes with the pencil tool underneath the attachment. Now as a reminder if you know the tree or the owner, for goshsake DON'T SPILL THE BEANS, at least until tomorrow.

Professing my ignorance of slant trunk style I can only offer my vision of what would be pleasing to me. I especially like the small accent plant which mimics the apex. Still I would remove most of the branches on the right side, just seems a bit more dramatic and harmonious that way. At least to me it does.

Whiteladder,

Is it me or does that look like a very good impresssion of "Godzilla" ?

I would be tempted to remove some, but certainly not all as you have done.
My main concern is with the pot, which does not have enough "weight" to carry the slant of the tree. Although nice, that thin rim does not help. It has a substantial trunk, which should be matched more closely by the depth of the pot.

Overall, with a quick re-pot and a trim not much more I would do to it.

Ian.

I like this tree, and am a big fan of this style. Shame about the swan neck in the trunk.

I'd slant slightly more, extend the crown and pads as it all looks too light for the trunk and style. Maybe jining and a small shari plus growing a pad in front of that problem trunk could help things.

The crown would also be pulled more to the left.

Arnie,

Spot on!
What I had in mind. You are obviously a wiz with "photoshop".

Wish I had the time.
Cheers,
Ian.

Deadwood would be good, but that drop branch, where the trunk changes direction is a character branch. In my opinion it would be one to accentuate, not to as a deadwood feature. In my opinion it was underutilized in the original design.

It's good that you disguised the lack of taper at the apex, too!

Regards,

Matt

Another chop job rushed into a pot instead of given time for a gentle taper to grow out.as we had on the 6th. The dramatic change of taper at the chop point has had a attempt to camouflage it, but it still is obvious. I have already said my piece on these chops here, so I won't dive into it again.

The artist took the idea of having the tips of the branches pointing up to a extremely, the curves towards the upper look contrived and too arched.

Great bark and I like the pot.

I think this is an excellent bonsai until the last 1/3 (top). To me, it looks like the thickness of the trunk is dictating the style from that point on. I feel that the apex should be jinned ut and the trunk sharied down somewhat. Then I would let that last branch on the left grow rampant and become fuller to make the "live" top. I would expand this growth to cover a part of the shari, but expose the jin as the true apex. Not wild about the pot, but it is appropriate. Clean off the strips of bark that stick out.

Very nice tree.

John

Thanks Arnie. I liked your virtual as well. This bonsai looks like it has the same problem as some of my collected bald cypress. Too much girth in the upper section of trunk. In my case it is usually because of hesitation to cut back well below where the final apex should be, and then re-grow the upper part while creating taper. In this specific case, it looks like the trunk is well past being manipulated into a gradual taper, so removal or carving are the only two options I see. Since so much of this species seems to be dead apex in bonsai, I felt that was the more traditional way to go.

Ian,

Godzilla? I'm glad that was "tongue in cheek" speak.

Wait.... look out!!! Godzilla's coming (see pic)!!!

John

P.S. Photo is from an aerial shot I took at Kouloa Ranch, O'ahu (Hawaii) last year. It is where they filmed Godzilla, Jurassic Park, and most recently Tears of the Sun. The "footprints" are still there.
