Hello,
First of all, What do I like about this tree: - I really like the trunk and trunkline very much, its an impressive tree. - It has a very nice nebari. - the trunktaper is clearly visable. - It stands nicely in its pot for now, maybe the pot should be shallower? What don't I like about this tree: - At the red arrows were branches which I've cut out. - At the blue arrow I've repositioned the first left branch, cause than its better in the outside bend of the trunk. Offcourse I know that this isn't directly possible, but its just to give it a thought. These are my thoughts, which can be seen in the virtual. Wessel

This tree has a lot of problems, and I think the timescale to make anything of it is quiet extensive. The trunk suffers from inverse taper at the branching is very sparse on the left.
The only way I can make anything work in a virtual is to use a method that I'm not personally familiar with....that is to trunk split that left branch and pull it down to create a counter balance to the weight of the right hand side. Or maybe it could sucessfully be wired down in stages. I would also consider carving out the worst of the inverse taper by creating a sabamiki. I appologise in advance if any of these techniques offend owners of this brand of tree....I'm not at all familiar with it at all. Arnie

Great looking tree. Great nebari and over all character. It looks slightly chinese in styling. The one thing I see I'm not too keen on is the reverse taper going on below the trunk chop site. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's really there. But I would be tempted to retard the growth of the tree above that area for several years and allow the branches below that area to freely grow for several years to try to thicken the base to refine the taper it has. My two cents.-G

the truth?
This tree has all the typical problems of imported fukien teas.Large scar from trunk chop.Messy branching.Abrupt angular change of direction......and on and on.
But,the nebari is about as good as i've ever seen on one of these.Good root work,i guess. Unless the owner wants to start over,I don't see any other option except to grow it on.A wider canopy may not be the typical chinese styling for these trees, but i think it could distract from the flawed trunk line and misplaced branches. here's my suggestion..... andy |

Strenght: Strong trunk, gnarled old trunk, nebari to die for
Weakness: Has anyone worked on the branches ![]() I love the trunk on this one. Very very nice, even with a slight reverse taper. IMHO, styling this in the "classical" bonsai approach would be wrong. The wild, gnarly trunk is asking for a penjing approach as I see it. That, plus I know from personal experience that bending a large branch on a fukein tea is hard to do, as the wood is hard and brittle. A snap is more likely. So, pretty as it is, I don't go for Arnie's virt (not that it isn't a nice one Arnie, just not what I would choose, no offense, etc. )The problem I see is that no one really gave thought to a design with the branches. It's decision time! pootsie |

hi, is it just me or the photo. The nebari is great and imho make the tree but are the roots okay? the surface roots on the left look free of bark and what is the black above that area. as i said maybe just me but distracting and disconcerting to me none the less.
