I must say there is not much I would alter on this one.
Perhaps, if the jin were a little longer, and sweeping more to be in line with the general flow of the branches and trunkline. I agree with Arnie, I would pause and admire that one for a long time. Regards, Ian. |

Very nice tree.I also would be more than proud to own this one.I think the carving on the trunk looks unfinished(un natural) and i'd like to see a little seperation in the lower left branching.Perhaps this is just the photo angle, but it looks a bit awkward to me as it is.

Hear, hear. Very nice tree and nicely displayed within the limits of this show, it seems.
I am very impressed with the detailed attention to the foliage pads. Mmm, mm good! I agree with Andy's suggestion of one minor adjustment. I also agree that the jin needs further attention to smooth it out and give it a less freshly-carved feeling. I'd love to see it displayed without the heavy wire, too. Perhaps in next year's show it will truly be outstanding. I also like the choice of pot (even though I firmly maintain my stance that these pots should be used sparingly). It works here, giving a rugged cliff feeling. The rugged cliff feeling is enhanced with the choice of accent -- very nice little stone. Pity the stand is too wide to also enhance this feeling. Here's a virt to show how I think the cliff feeling is enhanced with a narrower stand. pootsie |

Well spotted Poots,
Now why didn't I think of that Certainly looks a bit more precarious. I would not like to climb up there for a dig Ian Last edited by Ian_Homer : 3-Oct-2005 at 12:17 PM. |

Good point with the deadwood.
Perhaps if the Lower trunk can take it and is thick enough that jin could be carved out to give some light and shadow.

Awsome tree, I wish it was as easy to make these as it is to cirtual them! I tipped the trunk up and the branch after the jin down, then smoothed out the lower trunk some so the slight taper was a little more evident. (and shrunk the stand as prev suggested.

As others have said, great tree! Positives, overall flow of age and ruggedness contributing to harmony in image-display. Trunk, foliage attention.
Impressive stand transition poots! I try to collect regularly and can really associate with that! I'm having a hard time discerning the nebari with picture quality, perhaps my screen. Could be great, I see the jinned nebari, liking those. Items that stop my eye from flowing right through the harmony are: -shari on trunk as noted, doesn't fully fit for me that sudden full shari to fully livewood transition, I like seeing the lifeline flow through most of the tree -the seemingly abrupt vertical transition right of the shari completion/small jin (and harmonizing somewhat with the jin) but just appears very abrupt vertically and then downward with the small jin at it's transition, perhaps if this jin was larger (ie. indicating a major growth thrust had gone vertical-been beaten by weather and now a smaller size growth had lived on flowing downward-succumbing to the weather but surviving, make any sense?) -the very small top jin I'd like to see tied in with the rest of the shari/tree, perhaps part of future plans -I love the jin'd roots, but my eye seems stuck on seeing too many sharp 90 transitions on the overall piece, maybe my eye's in soft mode at present and not rugged mode? I do love the tree! Just some comments on where the harmony is interrupted somewhat for myself. |
