Wes,

Did you mean...."I should be(tired of bad tress)..........right?"....?

It's not really a bad tree.It is immature, but Arnie did a great virtual and in a few years the foliage pads can improve. The bark can improve.Unfortunately, the trunk's basic structure won't improve much(or atleast it will take much longer)As it is now,I think it's rather thin and has little taper.

Hi Wes, I mean no disrespect but that statement to me sounded somewhat grandiose. Irregardless of the age and stature of the tree it's owner obviously wanted constructive criticism. Donating it to a raffle is IMO not constructive criticism. Now your second critique in replying to my post is constructive and not only to the point but right on. But to say you are "sick of bad trees after eight years"? Eight years and you are still an infant when it comes to Bonsai yet your statement came across to me as though you think you are a master. If I took it the wrong way I sincerely apologize. I have never thought of you as the type of person to say it's my way or it is the wrong way and I'm sorry you got that feeling. Once again, it just sounded to me like you were grandstanding. I have, in the short time I've been here, respected your knowledge and the information you have passed on to the forum in your posts but for some reason that quote struck me in a bad way. It could be the media in which it was presented, after all I think we both know that words can be misconstrued on an internet forum. I'm sorry for disrupting this thread, I thought about PMing my response but since the question was presented in the forum I figured I would reply here as well. If this is out of line I would hope the mods will remove it.

Hi,

Grandstanding in front of all the artist that visit these forums would be a bit much for me,if it looks as if then I am embarrassed but still have the same feelings for the tree. When I put the 'raffle' comment in my post that was me saying that I read these thoughts earlier and agree. In this case I feel the 'raffle' comment was more constructive criticism than flout.

Hmm, skinny shimpaku- no taper, lot's of branches. Suggest bringing the tree down on itself ( essentially tying in a knot- sort of) to a height of 5-6"- don't prune anything except the branches that inhibit the contortion. reduce foliage by 75-80%. In spring add shari and jin, wire branches to form basic structure. Shohin, no problem (even with the new California rules.....

I agree. This is not a bad tree and should not be auctioned so quickly. It has many possibilities, alone or in a group. At the least, it is an educational experience for those who still acquire bonsai the old fashioned way, by creating them.

Nothing against collectors, gotta love them, but when you buy your stock 99% styled, you sometimes lose the joy that comes from creating something from nothing. I personally love taking a tree from an auction that someone has giving up on and finding the bonsai within it.

I have said this before but I think it is well suited here, "Trees don't make bad bonsai, people make bad bonsai."

Will,
"Nothing against collectors, gotta love them, but when you buy your stock 99% styled, you sometimes lose the joy that comes from creating something from nothing. I personally love taking a tree from an auction that someone has giving up on and finding the bonsai within it."

I would go farther than this... if you don't paddle your canoe to the mouth of the river where the pine cone is found floating, then battled with pirhana to save the seeds and then nurture them from germination to their full stature as a 300 year old tree, how can you possibly enjoy the process......

Come on, the hard part of bonsai is the small stuff, trunks- easy, roots (once you know what you are doing) pretty much easy- the details and getting everything right- now that is hard.

You do exaclty what the "collectors" do- you go out and purchase what you can afford- no more, no less. Your budget (as is mine) is perhaps just a bit more constrained.

Some folks are willing to invest more in the time spent by others in the development of material, some would rather invest the time. No right way or wrong way.
