TOD for Mon Sep 12, 2005
Submitted for your review is today's Tree of the Day. It looks like a Crassula (Jade Tree). Please discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this bonsai and offer constructive criticism and/or virtuals. You can use the pencil tool under the attachment to make notes.
By the way, the TOD forum has been moved under Students of Bonsai, but you can reach it, as always, using the TOD link on the menubar up at the top of the page.

Looks like a Portulacaria afra to me, not a Crassula.
I personally dont like the pot, but I'm expert. You dont see many Portulacaria as bonsai, maybe cause most people dont like to use succulents.

Normally I'm not a great lover of succulents as bonsai, however that said, I rather like what I see here.
In my opinion the strengths are: Good sturdy looking trunk Excellent bark texture Good branch positioning Good movement Nice taper Weak points: Lack of nebari (Not sure if this species is particularly troublesome in that department) Immature apex / canopy I toyed with the idea of removing the current leader and producing more of a dome. All the best, Aaron

It is interesting to me to see that Aaron is the only one to comment to this TOD. Is it because its a succulent? Is it because people have better bonsai to talk about?
I have several Portulacaria in training for bonsai. And would love to hear what people have to say. Especialy the "Masters" like Jerry, and Walter, ect. -Paul
