I agree it needs more foliage.

Like the root flare though.

More filling out as stated above. I really like the trunk movement. I am a novice at pot critique but can't help feeling that it needs a different color to contrast more with the bark color.

Why would any one want their bonsai to look like it was styled using hedge clippers??

Me, I like it the way it is, light and airy, looks like a fine small tree and nicely potted too, many thanks to you for the pic, so hard to find a Chinese elm that looks just right, 10 outa 10 if there were any votes.

nice elm, my eye is drawn to the (apparent?) inverse taper at the first branch which is highlighted by the rusty mark left by the iron wire. does anyone have tips to remove this? i,m not very good in matching trees to pots but i feel something lees understated may be in order here (all in my opinion of course). regards andrew

I dont like the roots, or the bird chest in the trunk where it forks. The foliage pads need filing in, but should be individually designed, not part of one mass. If this were my elm, I would put together a plan. I would make a decision to remove one of the forking branches. If I determined that the remaining one would not be a worthy candidate, the I would trunk chop, and consider attempting a broom style. But before I even dealt with the branching, I would layer it off the roots, it looks sorta like a crows foot.

So, 1st season layer off the roots, 2nd season address major branching, seasons 3-5 address branch refinement and foliage pad development. By 5th season, this could become one real nice elm.
Somewhat aggresive I know, but I think as i progress in my experience and learning, I have really focused on developing an overall long range plan, then patiently working towards it.
