Matt,

Glad to see some stuff getting posted again. I'm sure you have been busy with the new auction feature, but it's great to have TOD going.

It appears this bonsai is either dormant, leaf-cut, or dead (I doubt the latter). The obvious strength of this material is the nebari. It has a very wide base. The root on the left needs to taper into the soil however. It looks too straight. The roots on the right seem to have scars where they are callousing over. The roots could be a little deeper which would make that less notice-able. The trunk has a nice taper, but the apex looks like it is still rather young and needs to thicken. A little too pointy at the apex too. Rounding off the apex would look a lot better. From the amount of wire on the bonsai, it appears that initial branch placement is underway. Several, specifically that one in the back (lowest), could be removed and improve the silhouette. A lot of fine-twigging/ramification is needed in the future design. As of now the bonsai looks a little too tall and not wide enough. Those areas should be considered. I believe the right ratio can be made with the current height (it looks to be a medium-sized bonsai in the pic), but with a substantial increase in width. The rounded apex will also help with that.

I like the placement in the pot. I recognize the pot as a Sara Rayner creation. In the leafless state, the bonsai looks a little small in the pot. Still, I like the color, and it probably is close enough when in leaf.

I've attached a virtual of what I would like to see the bonsaist attempt as a "finished" version. I think it is do-able.

John

Beautiful Trident Maple! It is well on it's way to becoming a show piece. I like the movement, the nebari, and the branch placement. If I owned this, there are very few changes I would make, my feelings are diagramed on the attached photo.

Nice bonsai,

Will

John, hope you don't mind me using your excellent virt.

I just feel the apex is wrong, I'd lower it to create a more compact crown.

Of course not Arnie. I think the final apex lies somewhere between where I had it in my virtual and where yours is. I'm glad you liked the virtual.

Will,

I think that crossed root, that you mention in your virtual, is actually fused with the other. I don't know if removal would be an option. Of course, the way tridents fuse, it probably will "blend" with a little time. I agree with you about the branch tips needing work. The owner needs to get some ramification in that area, and this bonsai will improve tremendously.

I had to see what this tree COULD look like with foliage. Wrong kind of foliage for a trident, but it told me what i wanted to know.

I like it.

John.

I think this is where virtuals can possibly slip up, if its the wrong kind of foliage for a Trident what can it tell you? it becomes an unreachable and unrealistic goal.

Please correct me if you think I'm wrong, but wouldn't a Trident in leaf look a little more like this. (I also changed the apex, maybe its personal taste but it just looks a little strange to me in your virtual)

Best Regards
Arnie

Arnie,

I was just messing around with the bonsaiPAINT feature using the airbrush. I just wanted to see the silhouette with some fill in, that was all.

No doubt your virtual is much, much better. I'm glad you did it. Yes, it is representative of what a trident should look life in leaf, no doubt. Your virtual is the way to go with this tree, no question.

But I do have to ask, why did you wait until AFTER I made a goober of myself before you did the "in-leaf" virtual?

Just kidding, I'm a goober 24/7. I don't need help with that.

Great job on the virtual Arnie.

Cheers,

John

P.S. I also have a personal interest in seeing the TOD thread (overall)succeed. I may even do something abnormally stupid, even for myself, just to get people to post on it. This is a great feature on bonsaiTALK and it needs to be used a lot more - in my opinion. Matt needs folks to submit trees for it. We should oblige him.
