TOD for 21FEB2006

This Trident maple group is still very young. The trees have been growing together for 4 years. The trunks have fused on two pairs, and the roots have formed a dense mass. The group is 12 inches tall.

You can use the pencil tool beneath the attachment thumbnail below to make notes.

The Tree of the Day is an opportunity to offer your own comments, styling critiques, suggestions or display advice on a tree submitted anonymously. You can submit your own TOD by starting a new thread in this forum.

I like the initial effort. It definitely has a good "group" feel about it with varying trunk diameters. Although young, it is already starting to get a silhouette. The pot is appropriate.

I would like to see the future include a lot of ramification (and I'm sure the owner does too). If it were mine, I would consider adding two more trees. I would also broaden the canopy of the main tree to dominate all the subordinate ones.

I did a quick virtual to show what I mean.

A nice start with good promise. I especially like the "naturalness" of the fused trees. Good choice.

John

Like your virt John, only thing I would add is the tree that looks as though its growing from the base of the main trunk....it needs moving.

Regards
Arnie

I would like to see the joining of the trunk bases. As it is now...and admittedly this is a 2-d view....it just looks as if one tree is behind the other.Otherwise,I like John's idea of adding a couple of trees.

I like John's virt because it puts another tree onto the right hand side, and gives a new outline. The tree that is currently on the right hand side has a small bow that competes with the flow of the bow on the other side. To get the visual effect of the "close view" by having the outermost trees grow outward, but yet have a little inward bow toward the bottom of one of the trees, seems counterproductive.

I would also like to see more elevation changes in the soil level, but that is personal taste. Little mossy hummocks, or a depressed path running through the composition, bring visual interest to the lower part of the forest. I'm not so keen on the large feet on the pot, if they were shortened they would give the same effect, without drawing attention. Rather than looking at the pot as a whole and seeing a natural bowl shaped copse, the feet draw my eye.

These are minor considerations, however, and on the whole the forest is has a very good start. The branches are still too young to worry about, they will need to be worked on to create the canopy mass, but that's the fun part, isn't it?? The structure is good and now it just needs time.

Thank you for sharing!!

Joanie

Thanks Arnie. I thought the main tree had fused with the other one. I sort of like that and would keep it myself.

It does bring up the old question is a twin trunk one tree or two. Oh my, we may not have an odd number!!! Oh the humanity!!!

Ha!!! I have a higher standard. I require an odd number of secondary branches in any forest/group/coppice/national park.

Do you folks in England call them trunks or boots? The car thingie confuses me. But I do know where the bonnet is.

English is hard.
