Here is the TOD submission for this week. It's a Schefflera in Root over Rock style, height about 23 inches.

You can use the pencil tool under the attachment to make notes.

Remember: You can make your own TOD submissions directly by opening a new thread in this forum. They won't appear right away, but we'll have them on hand for display in upcoming weeks.

The root over rock section of this tree, with the adjacent aerial roots are very cool. My problem with this tree is the total lack of definition in the canopy. This tree should have nice wide spreading canopy. While the actual shape of the canopy is close to what I think it should be, it is comprised of a couple of thick, tuber like branches sticking straight up.

I think these large branches should be cut back some to allow for smaller sub-branching to begin establishing a more appealing spreading apex. Whatever remnants of these branches remain will likely have to be obscured by foliage.

It's gonna be a neat bonsai.

I think the left part of the canopy hangs down too low. The arching is too severe for the opposite side roots. There doesn't appear to be enough tension in the right side roots to anchor the left arching canopy.

I will do a virt when I get some time

Hi nice tree and nice photo to do virtual work with, I love the realistic way that the roots cling to the rock but I think that the clump of aerial roots growing from below the trunk detract from that feeling, that and the imho slightly too broad canopy are in danger of overwhelming the stone, I have adjusted both in my virtual plus neatened things up a bit. The pot to my eye is perfect, all in all really nice!

Andrew:

I agree with you about the aerial roots. It's a matter of focus I think. Is the predominant feature to be roots clinging to the rock, the aerial roots, or a confusion of the two in competition.

I find that it is better to use a shallow tray, and bring aerial roots straight down to the soil surface, if you're going to employ them. It's what nature does and therefore looks a lot better. Training them back into the pot at an angle is usually going to look a bit too contrived.
