  • "Great tree and design"
  • "I like this tree the best. It shows excellent design. The modest foliage speaks bunjin"

Second Place - Charles Bevan dbz12fan (Florida, USA)
Contest Entry #10916

Popular Vote Average: 7.83, Finalist #2

Styling Thread

Judges Comments:
  • "Design is OK, but I don't like the heavy guy wire. A thinner one could have been utilized."
  • "The design is not bad, just not finished. Where's the Shari?? I think thats what's missing in the design."

Third Place - FlyBri (Melbourne, Australia) vbmenu_register("postmenu_88373", true);
Contest Entry #10883

Popular Vote Average: 6.52, Finalist #5

Styling Thread

Judges Comments:
  • "The tree lacks a definition of branches. Too spread out."
  • "I've spent some time with this design. I believe that the design is OK, but could use a few changes. For instance, the branch coming off the main trunk of the #1 tree which is a main player in the apex comes off the main trunk in a loop. I might have taken that out and stood that tree more vertical. There is some confusion in the branching, but that may be due to seeing the tree only in 2 dimensions. But, I do like the design."

Fourth Place - EarthgirlOK (Bartlesville,OK)
Contest Entry #10910

Popular Vote Average: 7.00, Finalist #3

Styling Thread

Judges Comments:
  • "The design of the boxwood is not finished. It looks like the artist got scared to cut off more, which is needed. Where's the left side of the tree??"
  • "Even though I do not like box...it shows more effort...even though it is not finished"

Fifth Place - Maria Kapra (Los Angeles, CA)
Contest Entry #10928

Popular Vote Average: 6.97, Finalist #4

Styling Thread
Judges Comments:
  • "The foliage masses are too regular. That bothers me more than the good design of the trunk with driftwood"
  • "Although the design is good, I think the image has been worked in Photoshop. Really"
  • "What's wrong with this picture?? The foliage is too symetrical. Definately an edited photo. As far as the design, I have a hard time believing that the structure is there already. It does look OK as topiary, but not bonsai."

I'd like to thank my Mum and Dad, The Good Lady, and my dogs Pepi and Stumpy...

Seriously, thanks to all who entered, voted, donated prizes and/or adjudicated in the Contest. Thanks to Matt for making the considerable effort to run the Contest, especially during rough times with the Server. Congratulations and thanks to Mike and Charles for entering such worthy trees, both of which have kept my head from expanding to Davidesque proportions.

I look forward to the chance to do it all again next time.

Thanks (again).

FlyBri.

PS: Matt - are you planning on re-opening the individual Styling Threads? I have a lot of questions regarding the care and further styling of my entry. Thanks (yet again).

Thumbs up

What can I say? I am slightly embarrased , but really proud of myself .

When I submitted the picture of my tree I was quietly hoping for a top 5 finish. To get the top spot is just fantastic.

A big thumbs up to Matt for making these contests possible and for all who entered or contributed in any way.

For anyone who entered and put their money where their mouth is, YOU are just great!
I hope you had as much fun as I had. I know that some of the trees that were entered may never be masterpieces but everyone should be proud of their achievements and I am sure that we have all learned from the mistakes (you know, the ones you realise as soon as you have made them ) and from the informed comments given during the voting process.

For me it's a great way to practice bonsai and develop an eye for the opportunities and drawbacks of working with nursery stock.

Here's to the next one!

Mike
