may it cost below $50?
Hi,
First: Hello all. I think it's the first time i actually post here instead of simply admiring the resident's trees. This contest sounds fun and i was planning to take part. Problem is: currently i simply can't spend $50 (i mean the same sum in Euro) on a tree. The costs for soil and new pots will be a stretch anyway. So i got a nice juniperus procumbens nana for 6,99 Euro that might make a Shohin or Mame. I will wait a few days bevore making the entry because i got it from the nursery solid frozen and want to wait if it still looks good after thawing. Now after your discussions i'm not sure if i'm supposed to take part with something so cheap. I don't expect to win anything anyway, because i'm far from a styling expert. What do you think? Susi ANSWER: Spending less than $50 is fine. You can spend up to $50 USD on your tree and materials. If you choose to repot it that $50 should include the price of the pot. It is not necessary, however, to repot the tree. Regards, Matt |

Hi Matt,
I started working with my contest tree and The front may be different than the one I chose for my before picture. This is based on rootage I uncovered. Is this ok? Lesley ![]() ANSWER = Yes Lesley you can choose any final front you like, but choose only one. Designating front, back and side on the stock was intended to make it easier to visualize the pre-bonsai in-the-round. Regards, Matt

And What About Free Trees
I was given a few trees from a local landscaper who won't be using them for any jobs. Because she gave them to me they have no reciepts, and some have no ID tags.
They're still in their nursery pots and haven't been touched as far as styling. One of them, if I were to choose to use it, is a mystery as far as its genus. Are all of these things ok if the pictures clearly illustrate that they are not preworked material and are not worth over $50? Michelle ANSWER: Yes, if the plant can be used if the entry meets the requirements (under $50 value, original nursery container, no prior work). The rule about species/common name says "if known" above it, so your best guess would satisfy that requirement if you don't know. |

If I'm doing a mame (total height under 5" including pot) can I use something to show scale/size? Or should the "after" photos be the best picture that can be taken of the tree without distraction?
Joanie Answer: We'll have your dimensional measurements in the before & after text. While nothing in the rules specifically states you can't have a ruler or some scaling object in the final view, be aware that it may as you say, distract from your goal of creating a bonsai illusion. Perhaps the best option would be to use that scaling ruler/object in the final SIDE side view. We'll be using a similar voting scheme to last year and only the front views will appear in the voting gallery with a link back to the entry thread. |

Post your finished views and dimensions right in the same thread. BTW - While it isn't required, you'll definitely want to be sure that the background is plain and uncluttered and the tree is in focus. Usually diffuse lighting will work best, like an overcast day or in open shade.
Regards, Matt

Finished pictures
Can I go ahead and post my finished pictures now? Do I post them by "replying" to my entry thread? Do I say anything, or just put the attachments?

Yes you can post them anytime before the deadline of Sunday, April 24th. As it says in my post above, post them in the same thread. Don't include any unnecessary commentary or information other than the required part, and don't retouch the photos other than resize/contrast/brightness.
