I posted this question on another thread, but this seems more appropriate. I probably read the directions with too much haste, but do we post our "Before" photos or send them somewhere?

I purchased my tree; actually, I have two possibilities and will choose in the next day or so and then I'll post my photos (a spruce and a star magnolia). The advantage to living in sunny California is I can get out to the nursery. Actually it's not so sunny as it is raining out now and has been frequently for the last few weeks.

I have a tree that I purchased as raw stock from a nursery back in the fall and I put it straight into the ground . . . no other work. Its a laceleaf maple that I paid $50 for because the store was going out of business (Franks Nursery for those in the Detroit area).
Can I use this for the styling contest? I plan to dig it up this week. Here's a link to a thread on the tree from a while back where I am asking questions about it.

That subject was not specifically covered in the rules, so it is a good question. I think it would be best taken on a case-by-case basis with these provisos 1. You'll need to post a couple pictures so we can see the material. Do it in the Test forum and post a link if you will. 2. By independent assessment we'll need to do the following: a) establish that its value is $50 or under and b) establish that it hasn't been worked. Please put something in the photo for scale. Then I'll let you know. If I think I need a second opinion I'll get one or ask you for clarification. Regards, Matt

Well, I plan to put it into a pot this coming week. When I do that, i will take some more pictures so you can see it better from a couple angles and include a size reference.
I can assure you though that the tree is worth well over $100 . . . I only paid $50 for it though because I bought it from a major retail chain that was liquidating its remaining stock due to bankruptcy. However, I no longer have the original purchase receipt so I can't prove what I paid . . . I am at your mercy on that one. The company was Frank's Nursery . . . my fellow detroiter's Will Heath and Vance Hanna can both verify that Franks Nursery did indeed go out of business last fall. I'm sure they checked it out.

That would likely make it ineligible, then: The intent (not the letter) of the rules is that the material not be worth in excess of $50 at the time it is styled. Setting the budget was the means to that end. I hope you can appreciate the rationale for this ruling. Of course there is a wide variation in what $50 will buy, which is why I suggested the photos. The intent here is to allow a somewhat level playing field within what is practical. So post up the photos if you like, and we can judge then. In future contests we'll address this issue more specifically, but of course we can't anticipate every possibility. But we do try to keep things fair! Thanks, Matt

Matt,
I have a question. In This Post it was suggested that the person entering the contest was going to purchase several trees, take before pictures, then style them all, and when he has found the one that he thinks came out best he will then submit the before pictures. I was under the impression that one was supposed to purchase the tree, take pictures, post them to the appropriate forum to have the entry approved before they start to work on the tree. At least that is how I perceived this Quote:
Am I correct in my assumption or is purchasing a number of suitable pieces of stock, working the trees, then choosing the one that you think came out the best and entering that one in the contest? Or should the tree be selected, pictures posted, the entry approved, then it is up to the contestant to do the best they can with the material they have preselected for the contest? Thank you for your clarification with this. Adam |

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your question. Purchasing a number of pieces of stock, photographing and working them, then choosing a submission from among them would be acceptable under the contest rules, provided that the "Before" photos meet the deadline and specifications and only one entry is submitted. This interpretation is based on Rule 2F, which identifies that having photos approved prior to styling is a recommendation, not a requirement. Quote:
This is another point we might choose to revisit in future contests, but as it stands there is nothing specifically prohibiting it. From a practical standpoint the judge(s) would have no way of knowing, based on some before pictures, if the tree had already been styled subsequently, unless they were told. Regards, Matt
