Rather than styling another juniper, this year I wanted to try something completely different. I decided to see if I could make a convincing tree under 4" tall.

Unfortunately, the answer seems to be "no." At least not with Golden sprite hinoki, at least not this time around.

Because I can sometimes be too hard on myself, I also asked my master for his opinion about my composition. His reponse is below.

I respectfully withdraw from the contest, because I feel that my tree does not represent my best work.

Good luck to all of the other contestants. I'll remove Bates' triangle after the voting is finished, so that you all can laugh and jeer.

With my best regards,
Carl

Congratulations to the contest winners!

As promised, here's the tree which taught me something about the limitations of (me trying to create) instant-bonsai from (this particular piece of) small material.

Best wishes to all,
Carl

It's not a lemon it's just that the texture of the foliage doesn't hold up well on this scale. With all that antici....

pation, I was hoping for something really stinky!

Regards,

Matt

You're totally right, Ian. Why didn't I think of that?

Matt, is it too late to enter this?

How about putting the lemon on the other side of the tree?

I would have been impressed if you could have made a winner out of a tree under four inches tall.
