What about our ears?
Although we've had lots of discussion about visual composition for bonsai display, I'd like to hear about the sound track.
Silence can be deafening. In movies, the sound track is vital to setting the mood, even to telling the story. What kind of music do you think should be played at a formal show? What has your organization done before? New age? Western Classical? Traditional Japanese? Disco? (maybe not!) Perhaps a little Kodohttp://www.kodo.com Tell us what and tell us why! pootsie |

It should be appropriate, soft, soothing and contemplative. At one of our shows in San Mateo, we had a cd of flutist James Galway playing traditional Japanese melodies. Unobtrusive and mood-setting.

When I take long walks through nature I leave the walkman at home.
I have to agree with Carl on this, art galleries are purposely quite for a reason, that same reason should apply to formal bonsai displays. I find the added distraction of poorly choosen music quite tacky at shows and I think it may leave a impression in visitors minds that we may not want to. Silence is always mysterious, respectful, classic, and does not distract. Will |

Let me put this another way.
Last night I heard a live performance of Bach's cello suites. Should I be disappointed that I paid $35 for a ticket and they didn't even have a laser light show? -Carl

The reason why music is rarely played in formal displays of bonsai is because the silence leaves more room for imagination on what sounds could be heard. One goal many of us try to achieve when looking at a bonsai or suiseki is to become one with nature. Nature has a variety of sounds that can differ from one scene to the next. You would not hear the same sound on a snowy mountian as you would in a humid rainforest or a foggy swamp. So, why would you hear the same sound looking at a stone representing Mount Fuji as you would a brazillian raintree?
