Personally I don't like the one on the left, just my opinion. I like the other one better, again just my opinion. Would I take them if given to me, yes, and then I would sell the one on the left.

LOL Frank the true salesman!
But I do agree that I prefer the one on the right as well....

Short and sweet...

My thoughts...The "maple" is toooo symetricale and the taper changes toooo suddenly.

And, if you must redo the top...air-layer at the bulge...then, at least, you have a very nice smaller subject. Then...figure out how to "rebuild" the apex.

Nice devellopment work with both.

Dreaming...if only it were mine...

Not sure where you are coming from here. We probably need to have a discussion of the difference between bending and breaking the rules for reason and impact, and allowing errors to creep in that detract from the tree. They have two opposite results.

Apples to Oranges

Hey Chris... As I look at these trees the first thing that struck me, beyond the obvious difference in the styles is the vast difference in time of training...I would guess the tree on the left has been in training multiple times longer than the tree on the right. If I had to guess I would say the tree on the right has only been out of a field for 5-10 years. Whereas, the other tree may have been in pot training for 30-50 years. Perhaps there are root problems because of a root over rock situation...perhaps not

Furthermore...I think nearly anyone could produce/style the tree on the right from field grown material. In my opinion, it lacks artistry and naturalism. In the formal upright style it is the epitome of cookie cutter or by the rules bonsai.

The other tree strikes me as much more artistic and of a style that better represents the natural form of the tree. Inspite of its faults, the age, character and naturalism of the tree on the left makes it a far superior and therefore valuable tree. (was it not just recently that Bill V posted a similar tree that was valued at $80,000)

just my thoughts
John

Left is exciting.

Right is ordinary.

Apart from the apical flaw that Chris pointed out and the nebari height in the pot I really don't like the 'pocket' branch. I did a very rough virt on where I would take the tree if it were mine.

The one on the left has too many errors. The trunk like thickness of the bottom branch, the large bulge at the top and what appears to be a few more instances of bulging.
I also personally dislike that root base. It looks like its grown over a hockey puck.
It has artistry granted, but I don't think it was done correctly. The artist let the flaws go on for too long without keeping them in check.
