Here's an unusual forest species: Hinoki false cypress, unless I miss my guess. Remember that I only have as much information as anyone else about these trees.

Chris,
Thanks for posting this beautiful old Hinoki planting. I was fortunate to work on this bonsai during the show preparation intensive the days before the show. It is from the San Juaquin valley and belonged to a gentleman who has lost his ability to continue to work on his trees due to increasing age and loss of health. His local club worked to help sell the trees and this one remained in the area. Boon asked that one (at least) of this person's trees be prepped for the show, he picked it up and brought it to Alameda. It is several decades old as a planting. I worked on the moss and in the preparation of the foliage for the show- several hours of "plucking" and pruning it back to the desired outline and to differentiate the pads. Was a real pleasure working on a species that I have little experience with. I like the balance. John

This IMHO display is very good it is in balance in all aspects of display. The placement, the stands. The preparation John is excellent. I would be very proud if it were mine. By the way the group is not bad either.

Thanks all for appreciating this composition. Just to be clear, I only worked oni it for 2 or 3 hours on Boon's request. The tree belongs to someone else.

Love it, other than the light blue table surface, it'd be perfect with a tatami mat under.

John, after studying the group for awhile, I decided to apply some of the guidelines I've learned concerning group plantings, forest plantings, saikei, etc.
The group seemed unbalanced to the right because of the tallest tree. I shortened that tree, and raised the height of the tree more to the center, Your opinion? Mike

wow i find this display really appealing. I love the planting and positions of th etrees as well as the pot choice. I also think the display stand goes really well with the pot and trees. Great display, my favorite of all the different ones that have been posted up for discussion. THanks, i really like this idea of posting and critiquing displayes.

Hi Mike,
As I said above, I saw this planting for the first time two days before the show. My understanding is that the planting will be redone this year. Boon will work with it's current owner and get it back into shape. I like what you have done with the virtual. It is a very nice and well established planting, is time to go and rework it to regain its order. John
