i may not be good at much else, but this i can manage.

It helps to think into the future, putting a maple who's leaves turn red into a green pot will just clash in the autumn.

Then, where will you put your tree when it is sitting happily in it's new pot? light and shade will play a big part in the percieved colour of the pot to the eye.

Ultimatly, if your not sure, sit the root pruned tree in the pot and step back. look at the whole effect. even get friends and family to take a look, see if it does work to the advantge of the masterpiece, after all, the pot is effectivlt the 'frame' for the picture. Frame it wrong and you will do it no justice.

If it doesn't work, try another pot. If you aint got one, get in your car and go get another! lol

(and with the whole 'art' debate that happens a lot. paintings and statues are art. anyone can have one and apreciate it for years. bonsai on the other hand requires skill, only the artist can have it. if a person went to a gallery and brought a tree because it was pretty, it wouldn't last long.)

Nine posts later and I finally get an answer to my question.

heyCrow; I hope you realize that no one under the age of forty three will even admit to owning "slacks" let alone olive ones. Where's Mr. Blackwell when you really need him?? heyMikey!!

Ah, but don't we have to consider what season the bonsai will be shown in when selecting a pot? As you bought up, bonsai can change dramatically from season to season and depending on what feature you want to highlight at a given tme of year...the pot may not be right for three seasons.

Cosen,

Great Link!

Treebeard,

Thanks, I do tend to get a little testy when subjects go off topic, don't I?

Back to the topic...

Considering that we repot every 2-5 years depending on the bonsai, I feel there must be something better than "try it and see."

What would really be nice is a database of pots of all shapes colors and textures on a transparent or black backgound. With this and the magic of "cut and paste" one could try a hundred different pots on a picture of their bonsai and get forum opinions and help from those who are more artistically inclined. One could actually view and post side by side pics of slightly different hues.

I'm surprised that a potter hasn't done this yet. Coupled with a "click now to buy this pot" feature, it would be unique indeed.

Hmmm, okay potters, this idea started here on BonsaiTALK. A small donation of twp pots and honorable mention should more than cover my use of my last remaining brain cells.

Sounds right to me. Flipping through one of my kokufu albums confirmed my impression that the overwhelming majority of Japanese maples in that wintertime show are displayed in cream pots, presumably to harmonize with the soft tones of the bark while not stealing the show from the bare branches.

Best regards,
Carl
