The new deck finally got its first official use. I found out that it still has a few flaws. Notably the lighting for an evening demo is just not there. I almost went out and bought a bunch of Bic lighters for everyone to hold up ;o)
Guess I will have to put in a lighting system before the next demo. Going to be some deck if I ever get done with it.That is if I don't go broke before it then. Colin Lewis had the honor of doing the first demo ever at the new place. ( well I have done one or two there but I won't tell Colin that if you don't ) Colin's program was , to say the least, a bit different than the usual fare. Instead of just doing one tree and taking the applause he elected to do 4 trees. And he didn't just do some styling. He explained what he was doing in great detail. He talked about what he saw in each tree. What features were important and what wasn't. He not only styled the trees but explained the why and wherefore of each step he took. What the alternatives were. By the end of the session one understood what goes on in the mind of an artist (this one anyway) when he steps up to the podium to do his thing. They not only understood the "how" but had a good grasp on the "why" It was a rare look into a talented mind. By the end of the evening even the most inexperienced person was using terms like visual weight, mass and complimentary shapes, etc. Not only were these terms bantered around in the conversations but people actually understood the terms. At the end when Colin lined up the evenings trees every one knew how they got there. When he said that they were only pre-bonsai and now the hard part began they understood why. They knew how each tree got to where it was and understood the road that the results must now take. Quite an impressive thing as quite a few people there had no idea what a bonsai was before they sat down. As happens at these functions something is always raffled off. One of the trees was picked. Not just at random but after a pretty long conversation. Colin and the audience talked about the relative merits of each tree. Why one was better than another. Everyone had an input. After the tickets were sold and just prior to the winning ticket was pulled we sprung a little surprise on those that attended. The winner not only got the tree but in November Colin would come back and give them a private lesson with that tree. Not a bad deal for a $1 ticket ;o) Guess that explains the smile on old Jim Collins face. Might just do this again. As usual I had more fun thay anybody ;o) |

Ron,
Sure looks like a great time was had by all! You're right, not a bad deal at all for the $1 ticket! BTW: The deck looks great, the seating area seems to be serving it's intended purpose well! Adam |

Thought I would visit this thread one last time. It is getting a bit long winded ;o)
The new deck is coming along fine. Or was until I checked the old pocket book. Completion will have to be put off for a bit. At least till the wallet gets a bit healthier. The big plan was to have a display / sitting area. Around the outside was going to be benches. At regular intervals on these benches would be display pedestals. Got the basic deck and the benches built but then the pocket book was screaming enough already ;o( As a temporary measure I put some plastic tables that I had on the benches where I want my display tables to be. These tables are just about the right size and height. I am just about satisfied with their location. The trees are a bit low for viewing when standing up but perfect when setting down. The benches between the trees and the one I hope to be able to put in the middle of the deck should make things just about right. I should be able to set about 25 people at one time. It is a neat area but I will like it a lot better when I can get rid of those plastic tables. Maybe after Christmas. Could be Santa will bring me some more of that composite wood to finish the job. I have been a good boy. At least I haven't been caught . So if you guys don't snitch ......... Any way the trees are up and the bar is open. Everybody is welcome to stop by and set for a while. As they say in that hotel commercial "I'll leave the light on for you"" Ron |

Boy! Looks like the Taj Mahal! I'm trying to scheme a rationale for getting to BSF next year. On the way by, I may just look for that light. (Not Summerville's notorious red light motel ) |

Ron,
You have something to be really proud of there...albeit checkbooks and the such. That deck...if I had that on my home, you'd be hard pressed to get me to come inside. Wonderful job on it, and I'm sure there will be many years to come of clippings to cover it. Scott |
