A New Project

A few days ago I was out working on my cypress forest and it finally dawned on me that it is just setting out there with all the other shop trees. All my personal trees are. Just plunked randomly here and there.
They really should be in their own display area. Mentioned this to my wife and SURPRISE she agreed with me.
She has been after me to fix up the deck out back so I though what the heck I'll combine the two projects. Maybe I can sneak more money by her that way ;o)
As many of you know my tastes run to somewhat larger trees. Most of the time I can pick them up but am getting older so they seem to get heaver as time goes by. That cypress forest takes 6 hefty guys to move.
This will mean that my display area will have to be a bit different than most. The trees will for the most part have to be at a working height. A bit lower than the normal viewing height. I will have to figure out a way to make the display stands seem taller or just invite short people over to see them.
Also because the deck will , for the most part, be the display area I will have another problem. Getting even light to the trees. The house after all will put some shade on the deck.
Lots of little problems to solve.
Anyway here is what the old deck looked like till just a while ago. Three men with sledge hammers can break loose a surprising amount of wood. )
I have a few ideas as to what I want to do. Guess time will tell if they work. This is a new area for me to deal with. I have not built a deck before. Thank God some of the people helping me have.

Gee, Ron!

I admire your ambition.

There is a perfect answer to your problem!

Get the machinery from an old merry-go-round!

It will not only move your trees for you, but can actually move them up to working height, if operated in stages.

Besides, it will give your backyard character!

(might even keep a horse or two for the kids)

Might even leave your wife speechless!

Nah!

Bart
So far I have figured out the most important part in working with wood.
That is how to drive a nail without hitting you thumb with the hammer.
Just hold the hammer with both hands )

Ron,
Can't wait to see how this project turns out. I have my trees all on my deck, and would love to see how you make it look and function well!

Adam

PS. Another way to not hit your thumb with the hammer while driving a nail is to have someone else hold the nail for you!

Here is a picture of the old area where I kept my trees. Not too hard to improve upon. )
Will still keep this area for the shop trees though. No sense in wasting all those plastic tables is there.

Dear Ron:
I look forward to your solution.... As you know I just rebuilt my tree house display area. It was made in the shape of "U" so I could walk right down the center to work on all my trees.

In your case, a large lazy susan would be ideal, but not very practical, and that follows with the idea of a Merry-go-round....

I wait breathlessly for your solution!!!

Not a chance! But there HAS to be someone out there gullible enough to do it!

I'll do it. When I nod my head you hit it...

Here's a crazy idea:
If you can find a boat salvage yard (or get them really cheap) use the boat trailer jacks in some sort of table design so you can crank them up and down when needed. Or if you wanted to get really radical, you could suspend each end of the table from a 1-ton chain or engine lift winch.
