Larch In Tokonoma
Hi All ,
Thought I would post my first attempt at a three point display. I built an outdoor Tokonoma in my courtyard . It will serve both as a place to take pictures , and a tokonoma . When I want to take a picture with a black background I just raise the bamboo screen and I have a black fabric behind it as a backdrop. Don't know if I'm doing this right but would like feedback? Regards, Jonathan

Hi Jonathan
If you wanted to improve the display, here are a few things that I can recommend: 1. Improve the interaction between the tree and the accent. Right now, the elk leads the wiewer out of the picture instead of leading us into the arrangement. You may want to place it somewhere on the other side. 2. If you have room, you could expand the display a little bit. To give a little more space. Here are a few examples for inspiration. Regards, Attila |

Please be advised that my eye for Tokonoma is VERY untrained:
I would just point out that the tree might look better if it were centered more on the stand, and if it could be moved to the right just a bit as to not cover the scroll as much. I agree with Attila about the elk but I enjoy the use of the elk. Makes for a very natural scene. Adam |

Great thoughts this is exactly what I was looking for . Is the attached pic more in keeping and is there more I could do ?. The material I built the tokonoma with are cedar shakes and poles that I get from a guy where I collect thuga. They are native material. Always looking for more comments!!
Regards, Jonathan

Jem,
Very good idea, this will be a constant joy for all to behold in your garden. And brave of you to show us as well. The elk startled me at first but it really gives an interesting high mountain feel with the rugged peak and giant forest conifer. I have a feeling that you had a limit as to the size of your enclosure and that is why it is a little bit crowded. I have built a couple of these and they always end up to small. Overall very cool, keep it up!

I hope you don't mind a novice virtual and opinion but this arrangement is more appealing to me.

Of course now that I have posted it...I like your 2nd arrangement better. I will see myself out. Thanks for your time.

this may sound hokey, but i really like the way your eye sweeps from the elk up thru the scroll and finally climbs to the apex of the tree [or at last that was the line of sight my eye followed]. it really makes me feel like that is one tall tree.
the only thing i would change is the stand. the composition conveys a very "mountanous" feeling and the bamboo just doesn't seem to fit I.M.[novice]O.. if the stand was in the same style, but built with something akin to "rough hewn logs" [sort of like a log cabin] it would be pretty neat. i think the rustic theme plays well in this scenario. i think i might make a rustic "bark on" style stand myself, now that i think about it!
