Juniper 3 point display

This juniper was collected from a landscape about 20 years ago. Height from display table is 28 inches. First picture is today. The second picture is from about 15 years ago. I pulled it out of the "archives" to show the change.

Very nicely done Mike. The tree and the man are "looking" at each other. The man placed just perfect so that the tree remains the main object. The display holds the eye, nothing more could be asked for.

Well, maybe the baseboard could go and the pot centered, but I am just nit picking now.

Great display.

Thanks Will. Re. pot centered, I agree, but the constraints of the table size made that a problem. Centering would have pushed the scroll and accent too close together. The baseboard isn't ideal for pictures, but it's part of the structure that holds a backdrop when I take it to an exhibit.
BTW, did you get the pix I attached to an email?

Mike,

Nice, but for a couple of points:

- The pot is badly positioned on the stand. The pot should always go in the very center (left to right) on the stand. This is always so unless the stand is a wood slab of some sort.

- The scroll is non-standard and far too short. It should be a standard scroll for a bonsai of this size.

I hesitate to comment on the tree, but it is poorly angled in the pot. The distracting horizontal aspect of the base area deadwood is overpowering. The trunk should be aimed a bit toward the right so that there are true angles rather than "static" horizontals at the base of the tree.

Then again, maybe I'm just an elitist jerk and put far too much emphasis on artistry. ;-)

Kind regards,
Andy

Beautiful tree and composition, how did you get that second sharp bend into the trunk, if you don't mind me asking?

I also saw that you have the top of the scroll at the same height as the top of that very lovely tree, that creates a bit of a long horizontal at the apex of the composition. Was this intentional? I realize I'm not one to talk, but I was under the impression that this was something to avoid, and I do notice my eyes wanting to rest on that line. Just for comparison, I have made a quick virtual with the scroll moved slightly.

Well, yeah, but your points are valid, never-the-less and besides, who isn't?

Mike,

As a followup to my previous comments, if the tree were angled up toward the right more (re: my previous observation about the tree's angle), the 3 elements in the composition would be able to be more appropriately positioned: tree closer to the scroll and companion figurine farther away from the scroll.

Remember that the smaller element in the display should almost always be positioned farther away from the central element (the scroll). Hope this helps. As a reference, Carl Bergstrom has written an excellent article on the Art of Bonsai site about this idea - "The Principle of the Steelyard."

Kind regards,
Andy

Stefan, about 10 years ago that section of the "trunk" was hollowed out so it was very thin. Heavy wire was laid in the hollow, and then it was wrapped very tightly with raffia. Then it was spiral wired with heavy wire and the bending process was started. Little by little over the years the bend was created, using both the spiral wiring and guy wires. I still have a guy wire in place for support, and every few months, pull it a little tighter. I think I've about reached the point I've been aiming for.

hm, need to spread around some, yada yada... sorry.

Respect. First the inspiration, then the guts to actually try it, the patience to see it through, and the horticultural know-how to truely make it work. Wow! I'm years away from trying anything like that...
