Display stands
This year was my first year in a Bonsai Exposition or club. One major thing that I found lacking with our club's display was the lack of proper display stands; to say nothing about the general lack of display attractiveness. True, our club is fairly new, 9 years old, but I felt that if we were going to show our trees, we should put our best foot forward, so to speak. Anyway, I'm out to change that between now and next year. -MORE-
I thought we might be able to purchase display stands at the Exposition from the vendors the night before, but there were no stands for sale. Since then I have done a casual search for stands, and found them to be generally out of my price range. A friend of mine, who is a woodcraftsman / artist said that he wnted to try to make a couple, so he took a couple of my pots and viewed a tree or two that were destined for display someday and made a couple of simple stands. I wanted to get the forum members' opinions on these stands. Do they have any merit? What about his leg designs? He knows nothing about bonsai. The first ones he ever viewed seriously were mine. Which at best are mediocre. The first one is made of walnut. Personally, I like the leg design on this one. |

The second is made of cherry. I don't know how I feel about the legs on this one. Seems unstable looking to me. It is actually very stable, just doesn't look it. He said he was trying to convey the stand sort of floating above the table.

Skipsan, I like the design of # 16334. Simple and attractive, but wouldn't compete with the bonsai for the viewers attention.
When choosing a display stand, or daiza, be sure that it's big enough to accomodate the bonsai without looking like the pot is "perched" on the stand. I've seen that so often over the years. People choose a stand thats just barely large enough. If your club has a library, you might consider purchasing the book, "Bonsai Kusamono Suiseki" by Willi Benz to aid the members in the study of proper display. Check the link for more on this. http://www.stonelantern.com/booksbonsai.html Regards Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the input. I think the tree and pot that I have in mind for this stand will be in the correct proportions. I am attaching an older picture of the proposed tree and pot. I've been working on this one about 2.5 years; I know the girth to height ratio is off, and to me, the tree is at least two years from being show worthy, but when I brought it to the club show to be considered for the exposition, it was one of the ones chosen, so I'm going to get set up for the next time in case it goes to the expo again. I've done some more wiring and trimming, but don't have current pix. The tree is about 24" tall. The stand is 15"X21". The pot is 13"X15". |

Skipsan,
I like the stand that Mike likes. Simple and elegant. It would go perfectly with a large chinese elm I have. I might just copy the design if you don't mind Regards, Chris.

GaryS,
Thanks, I'm hoping they'll all look right together. Chris, I'm sure the artist who built them will be flattered if you used his design. I will certainly confirm that with him tomorrow. He normally does wood sculptures of a sort; calls them "volumes", as well as display stands for art gallery exhibits and furniture of his own design. This was his first attempt at dai. Skip |
