Corkbark Pine at WBFF

Here's my Corkbark Japanes Black Pine as exhibited at the WBC/WBFF in Washington DC this past May/June. Comments welcome.

heyDavid; That corky is a beauty. If it were mine, I would make two minor adjustments, i.e., thin out the first branch on the left and push the crown slightly to the right as indicated below

Mickey,
Thanks for the ideas. Agree on the apex move to right - chose to not to do that much when reworked last year before repot. Regarding branch on left, the foliage is covering an extremely thick corked branch - I don't think thinning would help much. I'll try to show a closeup this pm.
Thanks again

this looks like the same tree as your avatar photo, but now it's repotted with more of a slant to the left?

I think I like the more upright better, but I'm going to keep looking at it.

The one thing that kinda bugs me is the really strait lower trunk, then big bend in the upper trunk. Not sure how to make that work any better than you have.

Bob,
You are right, it's the same tree as my avatar, after repotting and tilting to the left a few degrees. And, as for the straight lower trunk -- well that's the way this 60+ year old california grown corticosa was grown -- I'm just the latest caretaker. And to mask the straightness was one of the reasons for re-potting on a slight slant and to not make it look like a straight upright start with later damatic movement.

Mikey,
Here's the heavy left branch in closeup. I don't think it should be thinned ... but ... that's why we all have opinions, or two or three ...

After going through the repeated re-stylings and re-pottings and being indoors at WBC followed by my club show, I think I'll just let it enjoy being/growing for a while.

Thanks for the comments.

heyDavid; After looking at the close-up photo I would agree that no thinning of the lower left branch is called for. Such is the difficulty of working with 2D pics. Regards, heyMikey!!
