Buttonwood
Here is another of my latest acquisitions, a Florida Buttonwood. All I've done to it so far is wire a few branches, and give an emergency repot. It was very root bound and of course the root system was as solid as a brick. I put it in this somewhat deep pot for now until I find a little shallower one and something that suits my taste more. I'm waiting for last years old leaves to fall off and this years new ones so I can do more in the way of styling it. Of course there will also be whitening of the driftwood in due time.

That tree of yours has some real potential, I would love to see a close up of it as well.
Do your b.woods always lose their previous years leaves when the new ones come in? Sometimes mine do too...and then sometimes they don't...just curious as to what your experiences have been. Thanks for sharing! Ryan

Hi Evan and Ryan,
Here's a close up. The leaves on this tree are in real bad shape as compared to my other buttonwood. My other bwood doesn't lose its leaves either, but I was talking to someone with a lot of experience with bwoods as I was looking this one over, and he said his looks the same way just before it loses its leaves for new ones. I may just defoliate some of it if these present leaves don't start falling. Most of them are mottled and yellow and they look like they should be falling soon anyway. I keep my other one in the house all winter and the leaves stay beautiful all year long. ![]()

That trunk is unbelievable! It's really interesting.
As I look at it for a while, more and more I see a human figure bendig low and doing an iviting gesture with his hands. If it was mine, somewhow I would capitalize on that image in the future, since it is such a unique form. Very curious: did it cost you a lot of $$? |

Hi Thomas,
Very nice indeed. I'd love to see it after you have had the chance to continue styling it. All the best, Aaron |

Attila,
The trunk is what most people looked at on this buttonwood. This is one of Mary Madisons trees that she was selling at the vendors area at the Ft. Worth convention last weekend. The cost was $100. Some might think too much for a small tree as this, but I see a lot of potential in it so it was worth it to me. ![]() Aaron, Yeah hopefully next year at this time I will post it again, and hopefully it will be looking closer to the way I want it to. ![]()

It was well worth the money. For such a great trunk.
Considering the we spend our life trying to create some great trees, what's $100? A family dinner for 4? This one you can enjoy a lifetime, not just one evening! |

Thomas,
I am curious. You said that you keep your bwoods inside all winter. I do this as well, from about october to febuary (when night temp. goes below 55), because I live in central florida where it gets colder than miami and the keys which is where the bwoods are collected from. Do you use any kind of supplemental light? I don't use any supplemental light. I just put them in the brightest window in the house. I have been doing this for about four years now. I was wondering what your thoughts/experiences were on this. By the way you got a great deal on that tree, good job! Thanks again for sharing! Ryan

Ryan,
It sounds like you and I do pretty much the same thing for winter care. I keep mine in a south facing window all winter, and water only when it looks dry. I never try to keep it humid like most people suggest to do. It really amazes me how good it will look throughout this time. The only thing I look out for are aphids. When I start seeing the sticky residue on the leaves, I give a shot of my insecticide, and we're back to normal again. ![]() Here is a pic of my other buttonwood. ![]()
