Art Bonsai Art

These are the pictures that I have taken of the exhibit that Steve daSilva was in. Steve, AKA Treekutter Gave me the hours of the show and I was able to go by today after work and shoot some pictures. The gallery was rather dim and I can see why the pictures that Steve took were dark. The shot with the blank picture was shot at an angle to reduce the glare on the glass of the picture during flash. -MORE-

I liked the way room was given to each display, and a viewer could look and take their time at each display without hindering the view of others. At the end on these photo's I took a couple room shots to give the feeling of the room. I want to thank Steve for giving me the opportunity to go by and shoot the display. I also wish to thank Steve for allowing me to think about exhibiting in the show along side him. I was not as brave, and was not going to let my trees go bye bye for almost a month. Steve works at the college and can pop in from time to time while at work. Maybe next year if this is done I may reconsider.

Seeeing this art in person is a lot different than seeing a photograph. For instance the large mural behind two of the displays, the one of Yosemite and the other abstract painting are about 16' long. The one with the tiles on the background with the tree on chimney flues runs from floor to ceiling, about 12' tall.

On the the pics..

This looks a lot better now. I must congratulate Steve for this brave effort. I think it is also sucessful, at least for the most part. With some of the exhibits I wish the tree were not placed exactly in front of the painting. I think it owould be better if some of the paintings were much bigger. Some 'backdrops' are fighting too much for attention with the tree.

Anyway, a good step forward. I hope it will have some impact.
California is an iNTersting place for such a thing. On the one hand the most conservative bonsai group there that I know of and on the other hand anvant-garde artists and experimenting spirit as we see here. An explosive mix that could lead to intersting innovations. I look forward for more.

Firstly, a big thanks to Mr. Al for taking the time to make these photos and share them with this forum...A huge congratulations to Mr. Steve for his foresight and dedication, in making this possible for many to experience...

I for one am very encouraged to see this type of exhibit happening in the States...Unlike some who have posted their views in Mr. Steve’s thread about the art works overpowering the trees, I tend to view each display as a work rather than a 'competition of one art form versus another'...This is almost like viewing the ballet and judging whether the music overpowers the dance, or does the dance compete with the scenery for your attention...If the dancers of the ballet were to perform their art without the assistance of the orchestra, the costumes, the make-up, the scenery, the lighting, and other elements that make up the total effect, a few observers would still enjoy the dance for the grace, movement, execution, and expertise of the dancers...Some can appreciate the music of the orchestra without the other arts being involved...Some can enjoy only seeing the costumes displayed...etc. etc. etc. ...However, put all of these elements together and the ballet attracts a much larger viewing audience...This is what I see happening with exhibits such as this one, the Weyerhaeuser exhibits, and the excellent European display Mr. Walter shared with us some time ago...By combining two or more forms of art to create an exhibit, one is in fact appealing to a much larger audience and therefore allowing more people to be exposed to bonsai…This is a good thing for all of us…

Regardless of whether the exhibit promotes our trees as the premier art, or as a secondary contributing art, or merely as a ‘prop’ to the display of another art form, we benefit from such displays due to the wider exposure our ‘trees in pots’ receive…

Some of the exhibits shown here work well for me, on the other hand some just don’t speak as boldly to me…This is most likely due to my own experiences in life, and my own exposure to the many art forms…Does this diminish their merit as art?...Certainly not…The same exhibit that does not appeal to me may be another viewers favorite…Regardless we all benefit from such a well thought out and prepared exhibit, and the art form of bonsai is introduced to even more people…Who knows, a future bonsai master may be viewing this exhibit, and may be seeing trees in pots for the first time in his or her life…

Thanks again Al and Steve for making it possible for me to experience what others are doing to promote the art of bonsai…

Regards
Behr

Re. Art in the Fresno area. My wife has a cousin by the name of Dennis Dargo who is an artist and lives in the Fresno area. The link will take you to the Fresno Artists Gallery website where some of his work is on view.

Thumbs up

Thanks Al, thanks Steve.

I certainly like this exhibit better with the better pictures. Indeed a brave effort, and IMHO mostly successful. I particluarly like the second set of shots and the very first one. (what kinda tree in the first shot, btw?)

I don't feel so great about the King Kong thing, tho

In #18031, I think it may be more powerful if the trees are a little more separated, but the image and feeling of a waterfall really "works" (except that first branch on the juniper...) Perhaps if the Juniper were moved to the left a tad? Or if juniper and pine switched places and moved apart?

Congratulations, and keep doing it!!! (without the gorilla)

Humbly submitted

Taking a cue from Walter's comments and his participation in the "Art of Bonsai" exhibit, I've carved up this pix.

Do you think the tree and painting "compete" less when the trunk is not passing through the frame of the painting?

Apologies to the painter for tearing up her/his work

pootsie,

'Do you think the tree and painting "compete" less when the trunk is not passing through the frame of the painting?'

Yes, I do.

About this one in particular: The tree is on the wrong side in my opinion. It clearly goes to the right and out of the picture. If it were on the other side it would go into the picture and it would look much better.

Here my changed version. Apologies to the artists.
