Re: Accentplants

They are lookin' pretty good. I am not wild about the green-on-green color selection for spring and summer, but if these show some fall color, or even die back in an interesting way, the green could work out fine.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Accentplants

Matt,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly the one on the right has died back allready but not in a nice way I'm afraid I was planning to use these accent plants to make a setup for the forum spring show I read about. Is this still on

Re: Accentplants

I've recently started playing around with accent plants as well. Lots of fun, and it makes it easier to be patient with my trees, most of which are a long way from being ready for a bonsai pot.

This first one is an Oregon iris - if all goes well, it should bloom later this summer.

Re: Accentplants

Rene,

Admittedly, those two came out better than two or three others that I put together as well. What I thought was really amazing was seeing the set of accent plants at our club's spring show last weekend. They definitely put mine to shame - and many were in bloom as well! I wish I'd taken a few pictures to share.

---

A general question - does anyone know of any good books specifically on accent plantings?

Re: Accentplants

I have a couple books on accent plantings, but they are both in Japanese. They take their accents pretty seriously over there.

One is called "Kusamono Bonsai" which roughly translated is "Grasslike Plant Bonsai," I believe and it was written by Kieko Yamane, or Yamane Kieko if you are looking it up in Japan. It's paperback and 110 pages with color photos throughout, published by NHK Jan 30, 1996 and it's fantastic.

She even has bonsai water lily in there. It covers pot styles and There are some how to pages that are well illustrated and the text of course is 100% Japanese.

The only unfortunate part is you're probably unlikely to run into many of these Japanese-native grasses and reeds out behind the shed.

It says ISBN4-14-04013101 C2061

Which looks like a pretty wacky ISBN. Any of those 1's could be I's given the font they are using.

My wife received the book as a gift from a member of the household of Saburo Kato when we visited Mansai-en in 1997.

Ms Yamane did a demo at IBC which was taped and is available

#V10 Keiko Yamane Creates Wild Flower and Grass Material Bonsai at IBC '93. Mrs.Keiko Yamane from Japan, using wild flowers and grass materials, creates three bonsai plantings at IBC '93 in Orlando, FL. I 18 minutes, perhaps through IBC or the Florida club
