Trees Are Ugly

"Trees in nature for the most part are ugly. It's not until you get to tree line and deadwood, or swamps with over size buttressed trees, or windswept coastlines that you start to see trees like those we try and emulate in our bonsai. Who wants to make a tree like a lollipop[?] Thats what most of the trees in the park look like."

Big Smile

I think trees are beautiful, even the ugly ones. I haven't seen many lollipop trees where I live.

have a happy, beautiful tree day

I am thinking that this is due to the nominated quote of Chris J's, in another thread, that was showing on the home page yesterday. Fli, are you stirring the pot?

Hmm, do you need to follow the rules, to create good bonsai? That was a good read. But lets remember it's a discussion, and there are lots of opines.

Gday Mcspeed & Callie!

No pot stirring here - I genuinely believe this to be an interesting quotation. I'm not entirely sure that I agree with it, but it raises a number of questions about perception and our relationship with the natural world. I'll get back to you when I've worked it out.

Fly.

Fly, I agree it's an interesting one at that. There are a lot of great examples for both camps, I think a lot of it is what happens to be trendy at the time ( seems a shame to even put that in to the discussion, but I think it's part of it today.) That rough and tumbled image is what is strived for today, but look at tree ten to fifteen years ago and there is a different approach. Not for better or worse more of what floats your boat.

Besides that same idea can be twisted into - do diciduous tree make convincing "pine/juniper" stlye bonsai, if not why do so many try?

Is that Haiku there?

I think it may be Haiku,

But what do I know?

Fly.

PS: Thanks for the insight, Mike.

Well OK....I did say that...but not in the context it is being used for now. This quote had to do with feelings about trees that are not otherwise good examples for us to emulate for bonsai.

I may wish to make a Bald Cypress bonsai which picture do I use for inspiration? All the photo's are of Bald Cypress.
