My ***EX*** fiancé used to say that I cared more about my (beep) trees than I did about her...
so...... I got rid of her!

OK, you guys are going at this all wrong. First, encourage you wife, (girlfriend, husband, partner, whatever) to spend more than she thinks she should on her hobby. Be gracious, be encouraging. Then, ask if she minds if you spend a small amount on trees. Less than she spent. She will encourage you to spend more to compensate. You can probably do this three or four times before she mentally adds up the relative expenditures, and figure out she's been had.

Guilt is the key.

My wife's hobby is also her business. She loves to give me grief about mine...

"How much money does your bonsai earn?" she asks me.

The response for this is to say quietly "And, when they give me a hard time, they die."

Good advice!

I get no flack at all. My wife is a quilter with currently 6 sewing machines including one that connects to the computer for embroidery, (and it's stictly a hobby, not a business) I can spend 5 times the time and money that I do now on my bonsai and not even be in the same ballpark.
