Forum Philosophy
It's amazing to think that my question might be answered by a world class authority or a world class gas bag... it's my job to distinguish between the two.

Let me see if I have this right. If it is your job to distinguish between the world class authority and the ubiquitous gas bag, then are you not saying that the philosophy must align with your personal philosophy? If that is so then why is it necessary to invite outside philosophers(?) to participate? Why is it not just the bonsai philosophy according to Pootsie? But see already, this is what you run into with philosophies, it is a battle of words, rhetoric, and sometimes the ever popular bovine scatology. It should be interesting to see how it plays out.

I see your point, Vance, but the quote is taken a bit out of context. I was responding, in another thread, not to differing philosophies but to advice given via the Internet. There is a big difference. There is a wide spectrum of philosophies, all valid to the extent they can be defended. Advice, on the other hand, earns a specific spot on a continum between good and bad.

That's my point. Any discussion about philosophy on the INTERNET is dependent upon a person's ability to skillfully take something out of context and totally butcher the idea. I have said it before but it bears repeating here, never throw pearls before swine, throw gold bars----they hurt more and do more damage. The difference between a philosopher and a BS artist; the philosopher thinks he has a clever idea and attempts to sell it with words, a BS artist needs a clever idea but is too lazy to figure one out, so he just uses big words and confusing syntax to say almost nothing. But I guess in the end the real difference is whether someone bothers to think an idea is worth quoting after he who made the quote is dead. If that is the case odds are the dead guy is a philosopher. But it is also true that much which is thought of as philosophy is really BS,-- like this post of mine for instance--- where every effort is made to convince someone else that dog doo is shoe polish. This leaves the unfortunate conclusion in this case, that in order for someone to discern philosophy from BS one must be an expert in dog doo------ or shoe polish, especially when on considers that both are something that can be stepped in. I know that's a stretch, but it works---sort of----think about it.
