Did He Mean Bonsai?

God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools.

Fools

Candy, My first thought was that the fools are those who destroy whole forests for the few selected trees for lumber as well as for cattles grazing.

I think that destroys more trees than all bonsai enthusiasts together could ever do.

Often the Southern exposure of a North bound Bull offers the most succinct opinion of all
When ideas fully formed and purchased by some from the Bovine begin to fall.

Actually,
If you look at the big time collectors (those who frequent National Forests with the appropriate permits, tags, etc) they will say that the areas they collect from are frequently destroyed later on in order to enhance the ability of lumber quality trees to succeed. John

The complete quote includeds "God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools... Only Uncle Sam can do that."

Which proves that Muir was, indeed, an Optimist.

ummm ..if we believe in god ..then god caused : drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods.....

and why couldn't god save them from fools since he created them too?

maybe fools should come after floods since it has similar letters...

anyway ...not my favorite quote ....
