Have you seen the boxes where the grapes are sold? Need I say more? you don't need to build them, just save them from the trashcan (dirty part of all)

I have found that you can get that type of screen at craft stores...
people use it to knit or weave something, and it works perfectly!

About the screen used for these boxes... is window screen OK or does that not allow enough drainage?

Re: Wooden growing boxes improve bonsai rootage ne

typical window screen is too fine and clogs easily. Use either the the craft store hooklatch stuff or the drainage screen. Hardware cloth can work, but it gets really nasty after a couple of years in contact with wet soil. I would steer clear of it unless you want to mess up hands and tools.

Matt

Some of you might be interested - there's a very nice 8-page article about the use of wooden growing boxes for Acer palmatum in Bonsai Today #50, still available from Stone Lantern Publishing at http://www.stonelantern.com/BTback.html

Re: Wooden growing boxes improve bonsai rootage ne

wooden boxes are cheap!!!!!!!!!! I just found out that people on the market sell me wooden boxes (where they transport their vegetables) for only $0.125 (equivalent in dollars) so, I find them as the best way to grow my bonsai's... it's an ironic price, but that's what we pay for stuff here...

I would like to see a picture of a tree growing in a 12.5 cent box, when you have an opportunity.
