Great post Will.

I work as a landscaper and am always digging out old trees and shrubs. I only wish I had room for them all.
Thanks
-Paul

You have the incredible good fortune then of being able to wait for the very best and be very choosy, I envy you.

New4me,

It was nice seeing you finally making a meeting also, glad to see you joined!

I haven't seen you around lately, so it was a surprise to see you there...

Another note on collecting:

When I collect most trees I tend to save the upper ground cover that is growing around the tree. I lift the root ball and try to save all the grass and other plants that are growing on it.

I find that most trees, especially those growing in the wild have a symbiotic relationship with these plants. At the very least they create a mirco-environment that the tree is used to and which will help the tree recover.

When I re-pot the tree after time, I then remove these plants when I remove the original soil.

I also save as much as the original soil on the root ball as possible and just pack bonsai soil around it when putting in into a training box.

I just took some time to evaluate were im going on this adventure, taking the advice I have learned from talking to friends in chat and from the forum and appling it to my trees. Basically getting rid of some stuff that is better suited for house plants. So i figured i needed to come hang with the big boys.
Plus everyone one from the club i Have met so far you , Hector and Tom were/are very helpful so I figured the club would be full of the same.

Vance Wood was not only kind enough to offer his vast knowledge during this collecting demo but he also took some very good photos of the cedar which he graciously shared.

I believe that it was Nick Lenz that has a pine potted in a drawer which is stacked upon a few other drawers....anyone have a link to this?

The maple I collected and potted seems to be coming along fine.

Hi! I'm new to this forum as well. I enjoyed your article very much Will. My question is; Do you ever offer to buy a shrub or tree from a landowner? And if so, what is a fair price? Thanks.
